You have to double tap hold S then hold W. The double tapping isn't necessary with L2+R2, you just hold both to enter ball mode. This is the primary reason why I say controller is easier, because you don't need to queue multiple down inputs to ball and this WILL become a huge fucking nuisance later if you aren't using the hamster bat.
