E3 doesnt even exist anymore. And 3 sucked so no one expects anything from 4. Youtubers were the only people talking about it and they didnt have anything nice to say.
Hence the handouts. Gearbox created something to talk about. Probably increased potential sales on launch day by anywhere from 5-20%

You can imagine if that all the good they have to say about the demo, a bunch of jaded gamers who hated bl3 would tear it to shreads and give bl4 a terrible name before it even hits the stores.
Gearbox was careful and it will pay off for them. But the game will probably still suck.
