You can see it clearly in the Xenoblade series because the first game, they had theatrically trained British voice actors and people fucking loved it. Then in the next games they just got a bunch of retarded anime voice actors and told them to sound cartoonishly British.

reminder in japan voice acting is a serious industry and they have full time voice acting schools with multiple classes for different aspects of voice acting taught by senior voice actors and these are the people who voice act in anime

The anime-fication of the industry killed VA. It's usually the same 5 voices in everything now.
People clowned on FFX for the iconic HAHAHA scene but the voice acting in this was phenomenal, all of the voices suit the characters perfectly and most of those voices are completely alien to anything you would hear today.

That PS1 and PS2 era presented uncharted territory for artists to really be unique and produce special content. Now everything is by the meta, AI will make that even worse.

People who mock that scene expose themselves as people who never played the game. The whole point of the scene is to be forced and awkward. They’re not actually genuinely laughing, yet people seem to have convinced themselves that the intention was for them to be actually laughing.

Theatre actors have to assume that the audience can’t necessarily see them properly, so their voice has to do a lot of heavy lifting to get their intent across. They also have to do multiple productions a day over the course of weeks, if not months, so they have to make sure they don’t fuck their voices up.

Most critically, however, they have the mentality of never assuming they’re too good for a gig. Sure, you’ll want to be aiming for the Dane at the West End, but sometimes you’ve got to settle for being the Dame at a panto to pay the bills, make connections and just stay in the game. If you can keep a straight face for the serious parts there, chances are you won’t think you’re wasted voicing Dr Simian monologuing as he unleashes his legion of super apes.

Voice acting is an undeveloped industry in English countries. The vast majority of voice actors have no formal education. Western theatre actors and Japanese voice actors are both better than English voice actors solely on the merit that they're trained, that's all it comes down to

It was apparently tech limitation that forced to at times splice existing recorded dialog and form sentences. FF really couldn't catch a break with VA until 13 when it became standard pretty much everywhere. Audio compression in 12 was so bad everyone sounds like they're talking out of a garbage bag, and I'm not referring to the helmet effect.

The voice acting in X was garbage, especially Yuna. A lot of that had to do with SE's incompetence at voice direction and making a game engine that required voice lines be the same length in every language. John DiMaggio was the only one who delivered a good performance within those retarded constraints.
