Theatre actors have to assume that the audience can’t necessarily see them properly, so their voice has to do a lot of heavy lifting to get their intent across. They also have to do multiple productions a day over the course of weeks, if not months, so they have to make sure they don’t fuck their voices up.
Most critically, however, they have the mentality of never assuming they’re too good for a gig. Sure, you’ll want to be aiming for the Dane at the West End, but sometimes you’ve got to settle for being the Dame at a panto to pay the bills, make connections and just stay in the game. If you can keep a straight face for the serious parts there, chances are you won’t think you’re wasted voicing Dr Simian monologuing as he unleashes his legion of super apes.
