It's funny you say that, because the AI is a lot better at doing EXACTLY that than generating whole pictures. It's called inpainting.

The only things AI can't do currently consistently well enough are fine details (think things like intricate jewelry, detailed tattoos, complex machinery, basically stuff that has a lot of lines in a tiny space) and backgrounds. It can do backgrounds, but it can't do them coherently, there'll be stuff on the walls that shouldn't be there, or windows in really weird arrangements/locations.

Everything I've dabbled in since has either had bad writing or annoying minigames. They generally look pretty bad by comparison too, but I went back to Once in a Lifetime and didn't mind the inferior visuals. Maybe I just wanted to try something 2D since BaDIK and Stray Incubus didn't hook me.
