Yes, but not exactly "because" of Nier. I mean, it does fill some backstory holes, yet you could keep that and discard the rest, and that's not recommended.
Drakengard, and especially the first game (as it counts with the full Cavia+Yoko Taro combo for maximum dread and edgyness) is a decent game on it's own.
The gameplay sucks, it's repetitive and reaches korean MMO levels of grind to get and level up all weapons (thankfully the latter isn't necesary to get all the endings). The music is a cacophony of remixed butchered classical pieces, adding to the horror you'll witness with the same charm of an experimental french movie. And the story is delightfully terrible, everything goes fucking wrong and gets worse from there.
It's not a great game, but it does feel like a "you must experience it at least once" kind of game.
Please, for the love of god, don't play the english dub version, just emulate the undub japanese version
