I was playing this last week. The storytelling resembles something from a college english syllabus. The gameplay is repetitive as fuck. Soundtrack is guuud. I have yet to finish it. If you only interested in the story, just watch it on YouTube imo.

Nier is literally a direct sequel to Drakengard.
Nier is often touted as "just a spin-off" as justification to skip the Drakengard games because of muh clunkiness, but it's a spin-off that follows up on a specific narative path. It isn't like SMT and Persona like that other anon was saying. SMT and Persona share commonalities, but they're distinct series.
If you enjoy the story and overall lore of Nier then definitely play the Drakengard games.
The game itself is also just good on it's own. An interesting little musou with on-rails shooter segments, phenomenal atmosphere, amazing soundtrack, etc.
Also if you haven't played Automata yet, you will absolutely benefit from having played the Drakengard games beforehand. Those games along with the greater lore of that universe are referenced more in Automata than the original Nier is. A lot of stuff will just go over your head. Read the supplimentary material too.

The events of Drakengard (the whole game, not just ending E) leading into Nier are literally the entire reason EVERYTHING in the story of the Nier games happens.
Caim and Angelus dying in Tokyo lead to the White Chlorination Syndrome infecting the population, which leads to red-eyes and the watchers running amok in the modern world, which leads to the Gestalt program, seperating bodies from souls until a cure is discovered, creates the grimoires, directly leads to Nier becoming Showdowlord, leads to the creation of shades, and so on.
It's extremely important. Sure it can just be paraphrased as I just did here, but you really do miss out on something but not getting the full picture. And if you care about these games and their stories, you're doing yourself a disservice by not playing Drakengard.

People say the game is suffering and oh so bad, but in truth is that mechanically it's at most a meh musou game with some dragon gameplay.

I played Drakengard and it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be, it's repetitive and when the enemies start reflecting magic it's annoying but the story itself was fine and the weapon hunt is pretty easy.
Kinda sucks that all the variety is hidden on the late-game routes
Soundtrack is 99% dogshit though, only the loadout screen before missions has good music.

They're effectively the same games bar a couple major changes. You play as brother Nier instead of father Nier so it's the original intended experience that we never got in the west and it adapts ending E from the short stories which is cool. The game itself also has some other tweaks over the original here and there that you can just look up to see if they matter to you. Overall, Replicant is probably the "best" way to play Nier in current year, but both games are equal in my eyes, and getting to play as father nier and seeing his dynamic with the characters is interesting.
Basically do you want to play as and old man that cares about his daughter, or a brother that cares about his sister?

This. Pretty much everything famous and worth experiencing about it is just three or so levels, a few cutscenes, and the soundtrack. It's very novel when it's going good, but that's inbetween hours of extremely dull combat.

It's genuinely just not really worth it unless you're super into this kind of stuff. It's a bad game, point blank, but it's a novel bad game. It's still bad though. Yes, but not exactly "because" of Nier. I mean, it does fill some backstory holes, yet you could keep that and discard the rest, and that's not recommended.
Drakengard, and especially the first game (as it counts with the full Cavia+Yoko Taro combo for maximum dread and edgyness) is a decent game on it's own.
The gameplay sucks, it's repetitive and reaches korean MMO levels of grind to get and level up all weapons (thankfully the latter isn't necesary to get all the endings). The music is a cacophony of remixed butchered classical pieces, adding to the horror you'll witness with the same charm of an experimental french movie. And the story is delightfully terrible, everything goes fucking wrong and gets worse from there.
It's not a great game, but it does feel like a "you must experience it at least once" kind of game.

Please, for the love of god, don't play the english dub version, just emulate the undub japanese version
