I'll never understand why Nintendo refuses to try and do something new with the formula like double dash. It was the smallest change you could make but they never did anything like it again.

Ever since MKDS (technically super circuit did it first but it wasn't transformative), the retro tracks let them bloat the track list by letting you enjoy previous favorites with the new game's mechanics.
Problem is now that there's so much retro content that isn't well adapted to the new mechanics that the new tracks aren't even that notable either. It feels kind of empty, especially when you stack it against how many tracks were in prior games, 8 especially due to the DLC.

Personally the main issue is you're forced to do time trial just to pick 1 course you like or want to practice, online mode doesn't let you do that unless you like getting your shit pushed in until you figure it out.

I love everything about the game and it might be my most favorite game in the series. Youtubers are just autists who want to race around in a circle nonstop and would turn off items if they could so who gives a shit what they think.

It's a different dynamic. It's like a mad dash to get to the next course with the items being more prominent and random elements like the cars mixing things up. I really enjoy it, but still like to play the 3 lap races when given the option.

The strongest Nitro Course selection since Wii. A top 3 starter track in Mario Bros. Circuit, Whistlestop Summit, Bowser's Castle, Rainbow Road, and Dry Bones Burnout are legitimately all-timers, Crown City and Acorn Heights are both on the better side of enjoyable, etc. even simpler tracks like Boo Cinema, Crown City, and Faraway Oasis have really nice shortcuts that're both strong way to catch up itemless and take advantage of the new mechanics in satisfying ways.
The only outright shit Nitro is Starview Peak because despite being pretty and having a good song the tracks is dead simple and only has a single even remotely demanding shortcut (the snow cut into railgrind into staying on the edge at that last water section) to make up for it.

I love the costumes.
The characters have better and more dynamic animations during races.
Rainbow Road is beautiful and actually gave me chills the first time I played.
DK's Astroport is a really cool track.
Knock-out mode is a great mode for online with randoms.

Whoops, replace that first Crown City I put next to Acorn Heights with Great ? Ruins. I know people jack that track off a whole lot because it was basically the first "clippable" skip discovered, but I feel like that one doesn't really make up for all of the other relevant skips on the track being fairly item-reliant. Still a pretty good track though.

I really wish they were. It feels like the only winning strategy on any of them is to just sit in the back with a gold mushroom until the end of the race. They're incredibly repetitive because of that.

I think it's really good, but you've got to have an intrinsic enjoyment for the driving mechanics.
I didn't think much of it until I tried it, and spent a few hours just driving around, taking in the sights, tricking off of anything that would let me, and just generally playing it like a sandbox.
The rewards and challenges are sparse, so if you only get extrinsic motivation to play this game, that can be an issue.
Personally, I think the chasing of trophies and completion has kind of hindered my enjoyment for a while. I wasn't thinking about what I wanted to race on. Just which three-star trophies I still needed.
I've been hoping for a "random grand prix" option for a while now.
Maybe World could have an Endless mode where you just keep being given random tracks until you decide to stop.
