What am I missing?

So after yesterday's commotion on Steam, I decided to start Hollow Knight. Since it's so highly acclaimed, I'm enjoying it so far. It's pretty cool, but I'm not finding it all that great. What makes it so special? What am I missing? It's a Metroidvania with above average difficulty, OK, but what else is there? What is the game's strong point?

The strong point is viral marketing. They paid a handful of ebin maymay ecelebs that zoomers worship to start off by claiming HK was anything more than mediocre. After that false premise was established, they just had to build on LE HYPE with a decade long wait for the sequel. As you can see from the threads, people are already aware it's shit barely 24 hours after Shillsong's release.

when the first one came out it was basically viewed as a cutesy 2D Dark Souls and Fromsoft was really damn popular (DS3 had come out the previous year) and "in" at the time, also it was a lot of people's first metroidvania and it had a big scope for the genre and a cheap pricetag. Then the devs showed goodwill by expanding the game with free content several times, which put them in a really favourable light in the eyes of the fans. A plethora of other metroidvanias came out since then but none felt quite like HK (for better or worse) in terms of gameplay, story and graphics, so the sequel was highly awaited

All metroidvania games are casual, it's on the casual end of platforming. This IP is on the lesser end of casual. I would only put la mulana above it in "difficulty."

Someone who exclusively plays metroidvanias, and feels the need to make it a part of their identity and try to gatekeep them, is a casual who they themselves needs to be gatekept.

Video games aren't about being difficult. That's what you soulsfags don't understand. Difficulty is in fact a negative thing when it's not directly tied to challenge & skill. You zoomer faggots have successfully corrupted game design with this. Instead of mastering good games with high skill ceilings, you play mediocre games with artificially high skill floors. Souls games are glorified movie games. They only sell because zoomers like watching people die to cinematic boss animations.

I just understand one thing. If there's nothing to overcome in a video game then it's not a game but a toy, which most older classics praised to 11 actually were. In an ideal world legendary games are ninja gaiden NES, punch out and battletoads instead of baby movie game slop like ocarina of time or braindead jrpgs of that era

This
Hollow Knight is better than those games despite all of its problems because it actually offers a challenge to overcome, naturally. I have fun speedrunning and breaking down Super Metroid (watch malding boomers who hate games call me a tranny because I actually try to master a game) but other than that it's an easy game with no challenge whatsoever. A nice way to pass the time, or a toy

SOTN is more of the same, it can even be made easier if you play it like a JRPG (a failed genre by design)

Except for movement, exploration and combat in the sense that you have a lot of options. HK is a very barebones game that's just kind of big and padded. Mechanically, it's boring. When you grow out of your difficulty=quality phase you'll realize that a one note game isn't better than a more complex one with options just because it's a little harder.

Yep you're another shitter casual falling for the trap of "more options = more depth" meanwhile gameplay wise it changes nothing. That's an issue especially with games with a strong focus on RPG mechanics, giving the player an illusion of playstyle to make up for the lack in interactivity, mechanical depth or combat feedback. Hollow Knight and Silksong have a basic moveset but in the case of Hollow Knight the endgame boss fights require you to actually engage with platforming and to be aggressive (risk-reward) to be beaten. You can't just hide in a corner spamming super missiles and end the encounter in a few seconds or spam that arc throw weapon in castlevania to cheese fights. Some low tier bosses in hollow knight also have that issue where you can just face tank damage and wipe them out quickly but this is the norm in metroid and castlevania games
And it's not like hollow knight is much harder. It's mid compared to actual difficult platformers of old.

Unironically if you played Rabi-Ribi or Hollow Knight coming back to zero mission or Aria of sorrow is impossible. Those games offer nothing other than aesthetics unless you're speedrunning and aiming to play them at high level, and the majority of people aren't speed runners. Certainly not the posters on /v/ who call speedrunners tryhards or trannies

More options with more mechanical interactions is more depth, yes. Getting upset about it and trying to turn it into a discussion of skill won't change that. A game isn't better simply by being a little harder. Hopefully you grow out of that truly casual mindset at some point. Your premise is wrong, and you won't get any more replies if you just keep doubling down on it.
