Once you guys progress story to Minotaur boss, you can party up and farm it for skin. You can sell tje skin on a board or turn it into anti degradation potion at repeatable quests npc, on the main road in sofya. It will nett you extra exp too, and potion sells well too.

The mage can work pretty well for a solo playstyle depending on how you build your character. A lot of it comes down to understanding the attack patterns of the boss you're fighting, namely by casing magic at a distance while the boss is using an AoE attack since the animation takes time and they tend to pause afterwards.
A combo like [backstep > magic:arrows (consecutive)] is a good starter combo for mages since it puts some distance between you and the boss so they take longer to reach you (backstep is available under the assassin tree). Chain cast is also a nice addition for a magic: arrows build since it provides two separate buffs that reduce your cast time. The wizard tree also has some nice magic skills that don't have cast times, and even a passive skill that increases your casting speed based on the number of wizard skills you have, at the expense of your physical attack, which isn't useful for most mages.

The game kinda used to be that way, but there were certain skills you could use to interrupt or block attacks, though not all weapons had access to these. A guard and evasion system was added a few years back, but the base stats for those are tied to the type of equipment you use. The two handed sword is probably the worst in those regards, especially at the lower levels since the only options it has is hard hit with only a 50% chance of flinching the target, and 50 guard power. If you remodel your armor to heavy, you can get an extra 50 guard power which complements the two handed sword well, or you could go for light armor which gives you 6 evasion charges. Of course there's way more complexity to it than that, but those are just the basics.

Anything DPS related, which tends to be the case in most games. Any weapon type can be built to be either a tank or DPS, but the one handed sword, bowgun, staff, and knuckles are all capable of equipping shields which will give your build a lot of tanking and survivability tools. To be honest though, most people end up either resetting or deleting their first few characters at some point anyways because of the complexity of this game, so it wouldn't be a problem if you started by choosing whatever you think would be cool.

to anyone who wants to start playing, here are some tips: bow is the easiest "class" to play as, and it's pretty cheap too. don't distribute stat points in all stats, just dump all your points in your primary stat and then the secondary one (for bow it's dex>str), otherwise you'll be underpowered against high level bosses. don't waste skill points randomly. and to progress in the main quest just buy a cheap armor and weapon from the board (people sell "failed" equipment there that could help you if you're just starting) and spam add friends to use their characters as mercenaries (you'll need mercenaries, trust me)

Yeah, there are level 5 skills now; their addition did a lot to balance the classes and make them less homogenous. The unfortunate thing is that while you can still mix any skills into a combo (with some rare outliers), the combo system isn't of much use anymore outside of making impact > smite combos and chaining a bunch of buffs together. This is primarily because a lot of the bosses move and attack too fast for longer combos to be useful, and mana management isn't as important now. Of course, there is still room for creativity, but it isn't the same as it was back in the day.
