I came back for a bit but I'm quickly finding out that I have nothing really that interesting to do. I have maxed out most things, like S class or better upgrades, ships, freighter, etc. All that's left for me is to upgrade my settlement to max and wait for my 10 million debt to tick down. Or grind missions and visit space stations to get storage upgrade modules.
The discovery aspect of this game is really really shallow unfortunately.

I commend Hello Games for actually supporting their game and still adding shit to it, but holy fuck they need to work on player animations and end game.
Half the time I play this game I put it down again because the player character's movement is so unresponsive and clunky.
Entire new rig for player models, new running animations and allow perma-sprint by default.
Secondly, end game.
There's a lot to do, but it's all pretty meaningless. You can get almost anything you want in the game through mining rocks with your lazer, it doesn't really add any incentive to do anything else.
Proper procedural dungeons on planets, community "raids" for parties of 5 people. Have the enemies drop exclusive items or upgrades, give them a small chance to drop cool shit like blueprints for a unique S rank ship or whatever.
Add melee weapons, or at least more responsive gun play.

I literally cannot play the game for more than 5 minutes without wanting to kill myself but for some reason I'm really enjoying the voyage. I think it's because there's actual tangible progression at a decent pace, and the ship as a base solves my biggest issue with the game which was that construction inherently discourages exploration.
Going back to the same shitty planet over and over to build a Minecraft house was cancer as fuck, but now I just make a comfy ship and bring the base with me. incredible that they couldn't figure this out until now. an exploration game that discouraged exploring for almost 10 fucking years.

the freighters were floating in space, so they were functionally the same as teleporting back to a base. no sense of place. also a waste of time to have to summon it and land in it. similar to going to a station to warp to a planetary base.

The fact they have updated this game a thousand times yet we're still stuck with the terrible gunplay and flight model saddens me to no end, I liked the game when they released it, I like it now, I don't think any of the updates have fixed the actual issues I had with the game when it released. It desperately needs some sort of reactive damage model to ships and something that resembles """realistic""" flight physics, everyone acts like the game is "fixed" but until they remedy both those things it's as bad as it was when it released
>>719889458
>an exploration game that discouraged exploring for almost 10 fucking years.
this is the fundamental problem with nms, it's an exploration game but the exploration sucks because there's not enough content. you see all the basic biomes and buildings within a couple hours and after that it's just palette swaps and one-off anomaly planets. it's only a shooting-at-rocks simulator because the planets aren't interesting enough to be more than rock dispensers; you land, collect what you need, and gtfo because there's no point in seeing what's over that hill (the exact same trees and terrain you're seeing now) or what's inside that building (a motionless npc who needs 50 copper and gives you 30 nanites)
it'd be a much better game if the majority of updates were adding new biomes, creatures, plants, buildings, etc, instead of irrelevant gimmick features like cooking or whatever the fuck
basebuilding is the reason the game is like this btw, they can't actually update planets since basebuilders sperg out if their homes change at all
corvettes are great though

not to mention the little things, like why the fuck can't you hover in place over a planet? these hyperadvanced ftl ships don't have neutral gear?
>>719891406
tbf the devs could've picked a couple of the irrelevant 256 galaxies and just updated those planets, with an option for new players to start in the new galaxies. that's basically what they did with the purple stars except they locked them behind a bunch of shitty fetch quests for some reason. i think gimmick features are what they want to do because making good procgen content is more effort for them

The fact that you have to play through all of it and ANOTHER series of annoying fetch quests that have you do the same things over and over again YET AGAIN just to unlock the new "fun" planets sucks ass.
I did a glitched nexus mission that was rewarding freighter runs and I didn't see that the quest kept repeating itself until after I had turned the quest in and gotten a new Nexus mission. Fucking kill me. Abandoned freighter missions are cool. I only recently just started playing but I'm really liking it. I don't know why I like this game. It's a buggy mess, super repititive, game there is a lot of planets but each one is more or less the same. I see the same cargos, buildings, alien species every time, and they have similiar things to say. The generated animals and plants are the varied but so similiar that you don't notice it.
It's a first time I play on relase and not a week later so IDK if it's common, but this update is buggy AF. I never encountered so many crashes and never had to use emergency saves because I get stuck in a building. It is very relaxing though.
Just gathering stuff, building another base... I want to try some other survival base building games one day.
>>719887221 (OP)
No Man's Sky is a great example that outrage and praise cycles of games are not based on informed opinions but by influencer based social pressure convincing people that the thing they were told to hate is now good despite nothing changing.
I saw people play it when the game launched. I had no opinion of the game and didnt care about the game.
apparently peopled hated it and years later people said it was fixed.
I saw it on gamepass and downloaded it, and it was basically the same experience i remembered watching but with more layers of distraction.
had a moment of wondering why people's opinions changed when the game was fundamentally the same.
then cyberpunk released and I saw the exact same phenomena again. Game launches, im having fun on pc with no issues, loud angry influencer mob on the internet, i play the game for years and see the updates come out one by one changing nothing. An anime drops and suddenly the game is "fixed and saved"... when it was good the whole time and the game people now praise is fundamentally the same.
tl;dr: people are dumb, never let their opinions stop your fun.

the frigate you do get for free eventually you just have to keep jumping until you see one under attack
the scanning for components and building at a station is for the new corvette ships
And yes, you start a new save with expedited progression and proper objectives that teach you whatever is new for the update, and then you can transfer all the stuff you got back to your main save at the end

No games let you explore space and land on planets SEAMLESSLY without some kind of Online or Multiplayer aspect getting too popular and ruining it so this falls into a good niche that many people want to be done better with more talent.
It's a 7 out of 10 people praise like it's a 10 out of 10 simply because of how completely desolate the game was at launch.
There seems to be this collective hope that if everyone says it's amazing it will eventually become that.
Hello Games is not capable of delivering a solid experience because they are not capable of focusing development properly. EVERYTHING is half-finished.
EVERY FEATURE is clearly never going to be a complete experience. Hello Games just can't finish the game. They're just chasing bugs and spitballing.

Bigger question: why isn't this SPACE EXPLORATION more focused on SPACE EXPLORATION?
Once you've seen roamed around one planet for a bit, you've basically seen everything planets have to offer (same points of interests, just different rocks, trees, and animals that barely even react to you to scan). Once you've seen one space station, you've seen them all. Once you've seen one derelict, you've seen them all.

this one is even weirder to me because in early versions of the game, the space stations did have slight variations. But then the retarded cocksucking community came and said they wanted everything in the exact same place every single time but with bisexual lighting so now we have even less variety in this procedural generation game.
probably the same cocksuckers who wanted to make a fucking cube on a shitty empty planet and then complain if it ever shifts an inch.

i enjoyed my time with it. i didnt engage with multiplayer, i barely even started the story. I found some ships, collected more ships, jumped to different systems upgrading my suit. set my own mission to find abstract art planets and those creepy abandoned outposts until the story looped. eventually got one of those Galleons with a fleet of ships and was about to start messing with base building but other games came out.
overall my gameplay loop was what the OP said, get thing, get new material, get better thing, repeat.
i think gaming needs some new terms
HypeCreep - peoples dreams and imagination seeping into their expectations of what a product will be.
HopeCreep - irrational belief that time cures all wounds
I had no expectations, i had a good time.
Honestly I just play Starfield instead. It's NMS but done better in every single way with better exploration, combat, story and writing. Survival craft isnt that fun for me and I can applaud the devs for updating and adding new content systems but they never touched the base gameplay which isnt very fun.

get on roof of building
shoot mining laser at egg

shoot/loot them
get back on roof

when i played it at 1440p in 2020 with a computer i built in early 2017 with a gtx1080, the bigger problem was cpu load since there were so many random entities in the environment. At that time Ryzen cpus were shit. when the 1080ti released in 2017 the best gaming cpus were 4 core intel cpus i7 7700k (i had an i5 7600k). it would have been a stuttering mess if they didnt know to reduce the range that things load in. Kingdomcome Deliverance had the same problem in 2018. at some point people need to realize they cant have it all and simply turn down a few settings.

You have so much mobility with the jetpack it's your fault for getting hit. I don't even know how much damage these things do because it's so easy to back away from them.
You're right that these outposts are good example of NMS problems, you forgot to mention that every single one of those buildings is identical (and they're already barely modified models of another infinitely repeated building) and that the eggs are mostly set dressing as they will never hatch without you shooting them - don't know who to blame for this exactly but they're the same people who made it so every planet in the universe contains every single mineral you need to survive, even the atmosphereless barren moons will inexplicably have one of the 3 hostile plants and oxygen plants scattered around so that you're never in danger of having to interact with the survival mechanics

this is another major problem with the design. They have all these disparate little systems that don't interact with each other. Why do the quests for the staff and robot guys if it's just a reskinned multi tool that's worse than the ones you already have?
why go fishing and cooking if all the meal effects are just worse versions of the cheap full recharge batteries?
why manage an outpost if the benefits are worse than just grabbing some glowing balls off the ground in 5 minutes?
they keep adding things that straight up do not affect the gameplay as a whole, and after 10 years that's actually kinda impressive. like walking through a minefield of interesting ideas and managing to miss them all

See, that's part of the issue. It feels like everything is baby proofed. If anything seems like it poses a significant threat, you have to go out of your way to get fucked up by it. Just look at derelicts for another example. They try to make it sound like your environmentals dropping faster is a big deal on them but ultimately you've usually got hundreds if not thousands of units of sodium in your inventory, plus there's heaters all over the derelicts, PLUS there's tons and tons of capsules full of sodium all over derelicts.

I still have that refiner and only play that character, except now I have more avenues to trade and smuggle shit. I still haven't ever built anything meaningful

Yeah.
Just go to a station and talk to the starship tech merchant, you can buy a Reactor to power a new ship.
You'll still need to collect parts for one though by disassembling other starships for parts (cockpit, wings etc).
Once you have all the parts you can build it at the starship fabricator on a space station.

>have to build new parts for half of it instead of just ripping shit out of my old ship wasting time and searching for resources that aren't even that plentiful on this world
Exploration shouldn't be punishment.

yeah, and finding cool shit shouldn't be a setback. I hate that I have turned down cool stuff because I just can't be bothered to fix it up and my current gear gets all the jobs done already. That's a fundamental glaring problem with progression and difficulty. Why even bother getting the S rank multi tool of my A rank already has every upgrade and +100,000% scan profits?

Repeating my idea from a few days ago that NMS needs to implement fully featured planet colonization with politicsl, economic, and warfare simulation and empire building. NMS as it is is a wide as fuck but shallow pool, but therein lies it's secret weapon: the perfect foundation for an actual game. If they built on NMS to this scale it would unironically become an industry shaking goliath of a game.

They should make a sequel and go full star wars, randomize the sentient races as they do with fauna, build a cohesive gameplay integrating systems etc. at this point they basically have an engine that plays like a demo

For NMS to truly be great, HG needs to make a new universe that's actually designed around all the shit they've added to the game. The game's engine is capable of so much more than it's being used for. Corvettes are such a great addition, I just wish there was a real game around all the stuff you can do now.

Can you build a sad diving base that deep? I might have to check that out. I came back for walkable ships and haven't played in a while
Actually do they have a pool exit for water based yet and can you fish from it that's the actual important question

Yes to all 3. I have a sea base about 1.4km deep because I just wanted to put an aquarium and a fireplace at the bottom of the ocean, but there is a pool floor exist for the underwater rooms and I use mine for fishing while I'm down there lmao.

That sounds pretty cool I'll have to check it out. Probably just cheat a creative mode base somewhere. Do they only spawn on purple stars? I wonder if they'll add a floating landing pad for corvettes or something. A docking beacon in the air above the water like freighters have maybe and you can warp down.

Waterworlds only spawn around purple stars, yeah. If you set it up right you can use the water landing gear on your ship, build a base computer on top of it, and glitch a floating base out from there
But also you're 100% going to want to grab the pressure shield and aeration membrane upgrades from the anomaly to survive down there. The pressure from extreme depths rapes your life support and hazard protection without them, and it's still fast drain with them.

That's the main problem since day 1. The way the game handles the core goal you have to achieve is rubbish.
You could make a good game about just fucking around and exploring and learning and building, etc.
You could make a good game about trying to reach your goal while trying to see if you can scrape up enough resources and dealing with enemies, maybe having limited time or have a fleet following you or having to optimize your stuff.
But the game has always been this weird mishmash of goals and gameplay. You have to reach the center of the galaxy, but you can build these bases and explore planets and learn language... why? Why would I need to build shit if I'm gonna leave it again? I'm being told to leave shit behind and keep traveling onward but the game also gives me all the time in the world to do so, while giving me a lot to build on each planet.
If you want to do the whole base-building thing then don't do it in a game where the goal is to keep leaving planets for new ones. Does the game want me to stay and build shit or move on?

its actually fucking crazy that you cant share teleporter codes with people to show off bases and stuff passively. Like imagine if people could have codes to post and share locations without needing to be online and invite a friend directly. instead of the current nightmare system of finding a portal and entering someone's glyphs and following directions like a pilgrim

I was about to say you kind of can but realized you meant like teleport directly into the base and not to a portal on the planet and just hope the base loaded in for you. Yeah that would be a much better system honestly. Like I get the appeal to doing it the roundabout way through portal glyphs and tracking the base down, but it sucks so bad if you're trying to find one specific base instead of just a general planet.

I agree entirely, but I also want to say its weird that a game all about discovering uncharted planets and naming/uploading creature and planet names has 3 omnipresent factions of sentient aliens. I know I didn't "find" this planet because there's a fucking frog guy right here selling shit. it really diminishes the exploration experience and feels tonally at odds with itself

It should just be removed. It's fucking terrible. It will always be terrible. Nothing they can do will salvage it. Just fuck the retarded storyline but still give people a way to restart the galaxy if they reach the center. Nobody gives a shit.
Every update I check in on this game again, and every update I actually just get slightly more angry about something and its missed potential.
It's like The Sims 4 but without a price tag on every patch.
It does nothing totally right. Every aspect feels like an afterthought even when they devote a whole huge update to it.

If anyone (understandably) thinks this game is boring, I recommend to trying instead Starfield.
It's like an upgrade version of NMS, more things to do, better combat and story. It does all the things NMS does but better like shop building and explore the planets.
And it has a full campaign with interesting characters.

I think it only matters if these games have an 'ending' to them. Subnautica and Don't Starve (but not DST) do. Dunno about Grounded, though.
If it doesn't have a proper ending, it's just a loop of getting stone, make thing with stone that allow you to get better stone in another area.

It's the type of game you fire up once in a blue moon because you get an itch for zipping around random planets and after a few hours of that you're done until next time.
The way the game is designed conveys a lackadaisical approach to exploration.
You stumble onto some alien outpost/hub, there are ships coming and going. There's noone specific for you to engage with, just some npcs hanging around with barely anything to say, you can trade a bit, maybe get a new ship or something and zip away.
The entire approach of stumbling around onto things that don't matter is deliberate so it feels more like an incidental sandbox.
I personally wish it had a stronger core of stuff to do specifically and more engagement with the setting but it is what it is.
It's kinda meant to be romped around in for a bit and that's it.
