Because battle tactics of the time were fairly static formations of dude touching dicks with each other. They just didn't know what do with fast harassment strats so they just stood there getting punished. Funny enough, walled cities were the best way to deal with that, since nomadic horse tribes didn't want to stay in one place too long to wait for a siege so they just fucked off for an easier target.
