Runback is a part of a platformer like this. The red thorn area is actually a great example of how it's used. You don't progress just from mastering the boss, but from mastering the environmental mechanics (poking) so that it's not even a big deal to run back to that fight.

You either learn to get good or you uninstall. Demanding even a fucking indie platforming game to hold your hand, when the mechanical mastery is the main appeal of the game, is fucking dumb. Go see if Farmville is still running or something.

Thus far what i really dislike is the fact too much stuff is gated behind bench hardswaps.
In Aria and Dawn of Sorrow you could just switch weapons and souls any time. Dawn gave you two presets to hardswap between.
Here? Not only the stupid ass fucking compass still takes an even more valuable charm slot, you cannot even swap crests mid exploration, and all crests beyond your basic ones have very objective downsides so why the fuck would i even bother with them if i'm only allowed one?

The runbacks aren't even bad and death became way more casualized compared to the first game.
In the first game:

Tools are separated into three categories, and you you're limited in how many you can equip in each category. All the stuff you piss your pants over are all part of the "convenience" category, so you aren't wasting a combat slot or anything.

Runbacks are legitimately important for the player to form a connection with the area. New souls games aren’t about exploration, the exploration is padding before a spectacle boss battle. Hollow knight equally values its boss battles and exploration, more like DeS or DS1. With that in mind, a checkpoint before a boss functionally means you never have to interact with the area they’re apparently the boss of ever again, and retroactively means that exploring it was just filler before you got to the boss.

No one would give a shit about the firelink elevator if the game didn’t force you to use it.

Double retard it’s not two different games. Runbacks mean that exploration and boss battles are connected, and that the boss is connected to the area it’s supposedly the boss of. Get what you want and you end up with Elden Ring, a boss rush simulator taped to an open world game with no connection between the two features.

If I die at a boss, I'm not going to think about exploring the path on the way to the boss or going in a different direction, I'm going straight back to the boss because I don't want to lose my money. I also don't know if the boss is going to give some new ability that allows me to explore new areas, so I'd rather put off exploring until after beating the boss.

I would if I didn't have to summon Pythagoras every time I wanted to traverse a spike pit, ending up having to screen transition an enemy to farm silk to heal myself, making my seemingly simple runback take 5 minutes when it should be 30 seconds just to fall into the spikes again once all the enemies are clear and I'm sitting on 1-2 masks, so I have to go back to screen transition farming, then finally make it back to the boss with 4 masks and full silk and have my ass handed to me because I'm frustrated because I have to do no hit speedrun practice just to get to my next attempt
