It wasn't that bad until I got to the main city and met those tepid companions. It's a game without any humour, or anything else for that matter. Like warm water or like an opened stale beer. It's still beer but it's not that fun to drink it.
I still played it for about 70 hours or more. I cheated my way through those 10 copy pasted power collecting missions and what else.
Some 10 hours went into testing mods how to make the game look more user friendly and perform better.
Also pirated it.

A stale beer is a decent description. As an alcoholic, I'll still drink it, but it's the kind of drink you have to fight to keep down. A stale, warm beer on a hot day is what starfield is. Also, the writing tries so hard to be mature, but it's so edgeless that it says absolutely nothing to the player/reader. Hey Arnold had more edge, hell. SpongeBob has more edge.

The four major companions all being boring nice people is so fucking gay. I remember as well when you do the quest with the terrormorph creatures, they all get pissy at you if you don't use the untested virus over the animals that can fuck them over.
Part of the fun of companions in games like this to me is the different reactions they can have to something you do, and maybe even talking to them about it where they might give their reasoning and it makes sense to you, or you tell them shut the fuck up. What's the point of having four of them if they all act like the same generic good person?

A textbook lesson in why a strong setting, solid worldbuilding, and interesting plot/characters are so integral to an open world RPG game, where the focus isn’t on any one particular mechanic being especially solid like in other genres eg platformers or pure shooters.

Starfield failed not because of any one mechanic being poor. It didn’t fail because of the admittedly lame lack of ability to actually fly your ship around, or because the planets had instanced cells and couldn’t be seamlessly traveled across.

Starfield failed because it was boring. Nothing about its setting was interesting or inspired player investment. None of the characters felt real or had any sort of interesting conflict/dynamic. Nothing in the plot was particularly compelling or made you think about your actions. The aesthetic and tone was so inconsistent that there was no memorable cohesive atmosphere that made you think “Starfield”. Take a game like New Vegas; janky, buggy, with many individual mechanics that are more limited and outdated than Starfield. Yet it’s still beloved and talked about to this day and still has higher concurrent player counts because its world, characters, themes, atmosphere, quests are all extremely memorable and interesting and make you think even when you’re not playing the game. Starfield does not have this, and so it was rapidly forgotten.

If Starfield had fun and interesting quests on each of its planets/stations, great writing, compelling companion characters, a coherent atmosphere, I guarantee you it would’ve been beloved even if that still would have been a legitimate critique. The problem is that all of the quests are boring and retarded along with all of the characters and the world. They could have built around so much of interstellar/planetary travel being locked behind loading screens by making it so that the vast majority of quests are mostly self contained within whatever worldspace they are given. When your typical quest is “fast travel to X location, grab this, then fast travel back here to Y” that’s a problem of quest design exacerbating your game’s limitations unnecessarily. Fast travel loading x1000 is a real problem that they could have mitigated, instead they made it so much worse than it even needed to be through the sheer retardation of how they designed the game

The solutions to that problem were so lame
Introducing their natural predator to a thousand planets they aren't native to is a legitimately horrifying answer to the problem. The history of invasive species even in modern times holds that you should never, ever introduce another problem to take care of one you have now
And no one buys the argument that the virus comes with a pretty significant risk that no one takes seriously but you
Then you learn about the grav drive and how the entire universe is based on "ends justify the means" logic

Larian studios biggest beef with the whole buldars gate situation is that pretty much everybody on the hasbro side of the deal got fired, and then the game became a succes, and the fuckers who fired the guys who hired larian to make the game claimed the honors.

The problem is that Cyberpunk had a good base as far as atmosphere/aesthetics/story and NMS had a good base as far as the tech and seamless nature of everything

Starfield has neither. There isn’t some diamond in the rough story and characters waiting to be finally seen after technical issues are resolved, and there isn’t a bunch of new sandbox mechanics they can strap on to a seamless space travel system. They’d have to redo the entire game and it simply wouldn’t be worth the time

Honestly wasn’t expecting much with all the hype, but Starfield’s been scratching that itch for me. The ship building is way more fun than I thought, and I actually lost like 3 hours just messing around in the cockpit and hopping between planets. Feels like classic Bethesda jank in spots, but that’s kinda the charm. If you’re into exploration and tinkering, it’s worth giving a shot.
Anonymous No.719916992

At best, they will introduce a way to seamlessly fly between planets, optimistically even solar systems. But that doesn’t change the fact that

>you can’t seamlessly land on planets or fly in the atmosphere and realistically will never be able to given the nature of creation engine (which is the true appeal and what everyone actually cares about being able to do)
>even if they do introduce flying between planets they also need to completely overhaul how encounters work in space, completely overhaul general space flight mechanics, how objects and enemies spawn in, etc to make it interesting
>fixing exploration would require them to completely redo the random POI system, disable repeating zones, make some way to procedurally generate new POIs rather than just reuse the same ones
>none of this will fix the awful writing and quest design that’s already built in

Not true. It was just for one DLC (specifically Shattered Space). You're referring to the Digital Premium Edition that was $100 which included the Shattered Space DLC (whenever it was ready), 1000 credits for Creations (whenever Creations was up and ready), Digital artbook, the OST, and Skin Packs along with the base game.

How about the fact that it's shit from top to bottom? The loading screens kill any immersion you can try to attain between the world lore and gameplay clashing constantly. The combat is the most simplistic shit ever. The powers you get are absolute dogwater outside of 3 of them with minimal utility. The ship buildings ok but you're too constrained by random bullshit, much like the rest of the game. The diabloot weapons are right between "Why's this even in the game?" and "Annoyingly game changing/breaking.", making it unsatisfying as fuck period. The main quest is the dumbest scooby doo mysteries bullshit ever.
>IM DEAD

I honestly don’t get the hate Starfield gets. Yeah, it’s not perfect, but I’ve been losing hours just wandering around, checking out random planets, piecing together side quests, and getting lost in the atmosphere. The soundtrack hits at the right moments, the ship building is actually addicting, and some of the little environmental storytelling bits are pure Bethesda magic. It feels like one of those games people will come back to in a few years and go “damn, this was way better than I gave it credit for.” Not saying it’s flawless, but if you go in without expecting it to be Skyrim in space, it’s genuinely an underrated masterpiece.

I still don't think Starfield was all bad. There are some parts in there that could have been good, if they weren't bogged down by the insane over-scope and sheer incompatibility of the engine and design goals. You can tell they were making something as wide as an ocean and shallow as a puddle in the hopes it would do well enough to get like a decade of DLCs and support to fill in all the shit that should have been there in the first place, while leaving it open enough to not pigeon hole them into any story lines or particular rules too early. Nothing is actually fully realized, except maybe the Crimson Fleet questline.
It all feels like the first two months of an MMO, where they're only laying seeds to try to get you invested so they can double down on what people cared about while leaving the rest as loose ends.

It doesn't feel like a world people are actually living in. The main story isn't half as interesting as even the worst side story in the game, you're actively discouraged from an evil playthrough. There are no roleplaying options, and your character can't actually specialize in anything.

sad part is, the questline itself really is very good. it has nice intrigue and the moral choice of aceles vs microbe is set up very well. then the companions woosh in and say "THIS WAS THE GOOD CHOICE AND YOU DIDNT TAKE IT, HOW DARE YOU" and the good choice is bioengineered and untested viruses vs reintroducing animals into their native habitat (well mostly, i think some planets didn't have them originally and it could be a new invasive problem? but even then, they could get farmed and eaten again, we do that with invasive species irl).

the writers were not onboard with each others' storylines. i'd almost say whoever wrote the companions' responses was actively spiteful of the terrormorph questline, because otherwise that's a level of incompetence and illiteracy i've not seen since i worked at a middle school.

Fucking sucks having such basic gameplay features locked behind skill point investment.
Imagine if Elder Scrolls 6 is as stingy with skill points because they expect people to put in 100 hour playthroughs.
You’d be 20 hours into the story about to face the final boss and you’re still unlocking shit like pickpocketing, crouching, sprinting proficiency 1.
There would be zero build variety because the first 30 skill points are for unlocking shit the dragonborn had level 1.

One of the weirdest things is your crew actively wander the ship while you fly it and interact with the things you've installed. They have that there and did nothing with it. Could have done FTL/Warframe/etc. style ship managment where your crew do go and put out fires or seal hull breaches during combat instead of you just pressing the ship repair button.

IDV (Speedtree) and Autodesk (the middleware that handles randomly populating planets with locations), and, I may be wrong about this, the vendor for the FaceFX middleware for animating character faces, weren't willing to let Microsoft sublicense their software for free in the Creation Kit.
So Bethesda had to hack together a fucked up version of the Creation Kit that had none of the actual heavy hitter features of Starfield available to modders, and you couldn't just plop shit down on one of the 1000 planets that already existed.
