technically? yes
genre-defining, a literal game changer, influenced horror games after its release even to this day

I just wish it didn't kill resident evil's identity and the survival horror genre though

Yes. Not a single other game balances arcade action and survival horror tension as well as this game.
>b-b-but the dynamic difficulty
And it still worked because there was more to the tension than just being low on ammo.

Yes and games are still being made to this day that take inspiration from it. Modern (keyword "modern") God of War, TLOU and games like this have RE4 to thank for their existence as they are.

That cinematic flair only is feasible with tank controls, due to the perspective shifts. If we can find a way to make tank controls intuitive, the genre could come back. We've seen traditional controls with the same ideas in Devil May Cry, and it was... what's the word... Well the illusions collapsed during transitions and it looked real janky.

I don't understand it either. There were hundreds of games prior to RE4 that didn't have tank controls, which I and everyone else played, and it didn't phase us to play a game with them. I hate to sound old but I think it's just younger gamers being completely coddled by modern game design where everything feels the same in every single game.

Except 5 is still the most sold RE game, even after all these years.
>i-it's only because of how hyped 4 was
>RE4 sold 1,600,000 on GameCube
>RE4 sold 2,300,000 on PlayStation 2
>Total on both consoles for first time release = 3,900,000
>RE5 sold 9,700,000 on both X360 and PS3, more than double of what RE4 initially sold. For fairness, I'm not counting PC and keeping it two consoles.
>RE6 sold 9,700,000 on both X360/PS3 as well, meaning if 5 was truly bad and only hyped by 4, then the numbers would have dropped for 6, but they didn't.
Total sales today:
>Resident Evil 5 - 16,811,739 (2009)
>Resident Evil 6 - 16,223,750 (2012)
>Resident Evil 4 - 15,552,463 (2005)
4 has had more years and more platforms, and is still outsold by its sequels.

not only this but also more people are getting access to the internet and are buying games than ever before. there are like 1 billion more gamers today than there were when Re4 was released.

And yes normies buy hyped up thing and ignore the thing that caused hype in the first place and the devs who killed the franchise will always pat themselves on the back for doing a good job for having higher sales numbers than the last game even if all they did was ride the coattails from the fandom that was built up from before.

see Diablo 3, the best selling PC game of all time at the time, with some of the most advertising of any game of the time at the time with a fanbase who almost unanimously agreed that the previous diablo game was the best game ever made for that genre, and yet it had some of the worst reception and player retention of any blizzard game

I played this trash fire just recently and i don't get it.
>guns feel like peashooters
>all the limb based reactions from 5 and 6 is completely nerfed or it gets worse (those zombies that grow armor)
>enemy ai is just broken, enemies constantly run straight past you and get into a cover on the wrong side completely exposed
>levels are mostly claustrophobic linear corridors where you can barely move around despite the fact that you can dash, slide and roll
>each scenario is bloated as fuck
>story is some over-complicated conspiracy nonsense
why 16 Million people

Yes, I replayed it for the first time in ages about a a month ago and couldn't put it down for a few weeks. At some point I needed to be honest with myself and acknowledge that a game I own four or five copies of is probably a favorite. I also think the idea that the village segment stands out above the rest or that there's a quality drop off past a certain point is also pretty much complete bogus, it has the most optional scenes and details etc. but from a gameplay standpoint RE4 never falters from introducing either an idea or an environment/enemy layout not seen anywhere else in pretty much every individual room.

For as famous as it is people also absolutely do not give the cinematography of RE4's cutscenes enough credit. Shit's maximally entertaining at all times. I've seen a cinegrid of it occasionally posted which is mostly just comprised of in-gameplay over the shoulder shots and it really doesn't do justice to how stylish it is.

I saw a thread a couple of days ago where one anon pointed out that RE6 was either the best selling or second best selling and some other anon called him a retard and confidently said it wasn't even in the top five and I don't know where the latter got that idea from at all
I assume he didn't notice that Capcom's official sales site lists ports of certain games individually and thought the total was much lower than it really is

This >>719908158 is true, actually. REmake was also a masterpiece but it did garbage sales. People were getting worned out with the formula and if they didn't do something drastic the series was going to be shelved. As much as you may dislike the changes it brought, RE4 injected adrenaline into the franchise. Had Mikami stayed he would've probably made something closer to Shadows of the Damned than The Evil Within but he definitely wouldn't have made RE5.
