Why did they come up with such an horrifically unimaginative setting? It could have been Elder Scrolls-meets-Mass Effect, where you've got a bunch of different playable alien species to choose from, each with their own culture and attributes. instead we got nigger simulator

No it couldn't have. Bethesda is incapable of creating anything even approaching Mass Effect. That's why what you get was an even more stripped down version of Skyrim in space. It is literally all they can do.

Bethesda is literally known for hating the more interesting aspects of Elder Scrolls and Fallout and actively going out of their way to make the settings more boring and generic over the years
