Demon's Souls wasn't the problem. Casualizing it and rebranding as Dark Souls and then making ten sequels was the problem.

Demon's Souls is a fantastic game.
The problem is all the soulslikes (including fromsoft's own souls games) have forgotten what made demon's souls special.
