As someone who played it during a marathon, it kinda drops the ball once you get into tokyo and then really drops hard after the reactor. I liked 4A a lot more.

I liked it but you can end up spending a lot of time aimlessly wandering around Tokyo if you put the game down for too long and/or don't want to use guides

I can agree with 2 being the best but I think Vengeance is better than Apocalypse.
I'm also very much in favor of considering SJ as 'mainline'.

SMTIV was the last well balanced jrpg in terms of combat. You had to grind hard early, but after the grind it started to get easier as you learned the rock paper scissors element types.

Gameplay is more involved and the game is way longer. CT is one of the easiest and shortest rpgs of its time.
I don't blame them, very few jrpgs don't get boring after the 20 hour mark.
