The average person hasn't even heard of Linux and if they have they only know it's some kind of operating system.
People who want to play PC games want to play games. They don't want to install any operating systems. They don't want to learn anything new. They don't want to or care about learning Linux.
It doesn't matter how easy it becomes to install or use.
Nobody wants to switch over to Linux. It could be a simple one button click install and nobody would do it.
Any single hurdle no matter how feeble is enough to keep people out.
Just learning to use a PC keeps people on console. Just having to build a PC keeps Premade companies in business.
A 1 inch barrier is all you need to block out 90% of consumers.
Even on Steam only 2.64% of users are on Linux.

>People who want to play PC games want to play games. They don't want to install any operating systems. They don't want to learn anything new. They don't want to or care about learning Linux.
This is a side effect of PC gaming becoming more popular. Before steam it used to be common to build your own PC and you needed to install the operating system yourself as well. As things get more popular though you need to build things around the customer you consider "your dumbest idiot". Meaning you lose a lot of freedom and customizability. This is how phones are today.
>It doesn't matter how easy it becomes to install or use.
>Nobody wants to switch over to Linux. It could be a simple one button click install and nobody would do it.

Not really a great barrier but tall fences make for good neighbors, gatekeeping is good and all that.

Because most prebuilts use windows and not linux. This shit ain't hard. /v/ has severe cognitive bias thinking the entire world builds their own shit, installs their own OS, regularly tweaks out their machines, etc. They don't. They never have and never will.
The majority of desktop users buy a pre-built. They never install or even reinstall an OS - if something goes wrong, they take it to a relative who knows shit, or otherwise takes it in to the geek squad or whatever the fuck. They never upgrade parts. It's a fair bet a great many of them don't even know you can install a different OS if they wanted to, and if they did, they know dick-all about linux and wouldn't look at it.
If you actually got these users on linux, they'd have a horrible time, nothing would fucking work for them, and they'd come out of the experience with nothing but bad things to say about it, putting even more people off from linux altogether. Just leave shit alone. People who want to bother and know how to bother, will bother. The rest won't, never will, and don't give enough of a shit to ask the question.

Start small. do you have multiple drives? If so, try dual booting mint or catchyos or something on another drive and just playing around with it. That way if you fuck anything up on your linux distro you can still boot into windows (assuming you know how to select your boot partion when booting up your computer... if not just ask). Also, highly reccomend keeping a back up bootable live ISO of whatever distro you end up going with on a USB drive that you NEVER EVER replace (except maybe to update it to a newer version) as basically a liferaft. I cannot tell you how many times having this has saved me because it lets you boot into another linux distro and fix things on your current one without booting into it.

The more I learn about distros, the more I realise the only real choice is fedora.
They have the most official support and every program you could want has native .rpms from the devs themselves that you can just easily install with no hassle.
Meanwhile if you choose something arch-based you're forced to fuck around with the AUR which is not ideal since it's community driven.
Why don't more people use and recommend Fedora? It seems like the no-brain choice.

>Why don't gamers use Linux for gaming?
Let's see

- Games run slower.
- Multiplayer games with anticheat don't work at all.
- New games often require some tweaking before they can boot.
- If you own an Nvidia GPU, things like Smooth Motion won't work on certain games and when it does, it can break at times, so it's not reliable.
- When things break, it's more often than not a bug introduced in some patch or driver update and you have to wait for the random guthub guy to fix it whenever he feels like it.
- HDR support is bad and doesn't have the improvements that Win11 has.
- Fonts look blurry, have terrible aliasing or look "off"
- integer scaling is also broken and doesn't work as intended in some cases

I could go on, but you get the point, it's a fun OS to play with for sure, but when you want to do things and want them to actually work, you gotta use Windows.

Nah, it's made by a series of people who make a tool to solve a problem they have, then they share those tools.
This is great because there's a solution to every problem, the issue is there's no UX work done because the creator understands their solution already.
There's no real motivation to make your tool easier to use by other people other than the goodness of one's heart.
So what you end up with is a bunch of people who have wasted a lifetime learning the ins and outs of these people's tools with a sunk cost of the time spent, who THEN feel superior to everyone else.

So debian is the real no-brain choice for distros then...
Same question then. Why doesn't everybody just use debian?

Debian itself is not nobrain, ubuntu was made to be a nobrain debian. And mint is ubuntu with corporate shit removed.

You changed your own mind that quickly and you're still wondering why everyone doesn't agree? Some people like Debian and some people like Fedora and some people like Arch. It is okay for multiple distros to exist and I'm tired of Windows refugees seething about it and calling for "one Linux" just to avoid making a simple and non-permanent choice about something.

2D information is objectively more useful
Text is 1D and cannot efficiently expose information in comparison to a GUI because the read frame (i.e. end user) is restricted to unidirectional single-dimensional data
You're about to protest that a CLI can be programmed to give you arbitrary information organized arbitrarily and even in grids or more complex patterns, but this is a GUI
Linux will never ever catch on until autists understand and accept this
