You'll want to look it up but my understanding is they got forced by the Chinese government to alter the story in a way that makes it incomprehensible; characters surviving shit after dying and other nonsense.

Yeah, I was considering playing it because it's on gamepass and I tend to enjoy shitty soulslikes but hearing that soured what little interest I had in the game.

Combat seems cool but the big dangerous enemies are really aggressive idk if it's even worth using my weapon skills instead of dodge/parry/light attacks

It's definitely worth using weapon skills since a lot of them stagger those big enemies so you can get in more attacks, and a lot of weapon skills do more damage as well.
