A bit of trial and error, but you could actually make a logical connection between what two item do at a certain level, then you pick them in the order those two end up aligning.

Trial and error at first but once you understand how each piece interacts with other pieces then you can use logic to chart out a path.
But alternate endings are 100% trial an error though
