Yeah, a lot of them actually did it by hand. These dudes would literally spend hours lining up characters to make Cloud’s spiky hair look just right using slashes, underscores, and asterisks. There were some old school ANSI/ASCII editors like TheDraw or ACiDDraw that helped a bit, but for a lot of those early text guides, it was pure dedication and terminal autism. Had to make sure your monospaced font displayed it perfectly too. It was less about efficiency and more about flexing your formatting skills in Notepad.

I'm not just talking about the ads (I'm using Brave anyway), but the all around bloat. Those modern walkthru suppliers websites take ages to load compared to a text file, are always cut up into a million different html pieces with an unintuitive (if even existent) ToC, bloated with a shitton of (in-game) pictures, videos, etc.
Can't search one of ther walkthrus with a simple "find x", because you have to get to the correct subpage first, and unless you already know which subpage you need it's just an annoying search. Not to mention that so those millions of subpages only contain the equivalent of like half a sheet if paper.
It's inconvenient, inefficient, annoying, yet they get paid when I click their shit.

I still turn to GameFAQs whenever I want to read a walkthrough of an old game. Which isn't often, but still.

IGN used to have pretty good walkthroughs for loads of games back in the 2000s, and while they still technically host a lot of them, most of them are completely broken by the site's new layout.
It's a little sad that nobody over there saw fit to preserve any of that. They were like halfway between FAQs and official strategy guides. Very nicely laid out and full of helpful screenshots.
