Can we talk about character design in modern Western media? It feels like young white male characters with a rebellious or edgy vibe have basically disappeared. These days, if a character is young and rebellious, they’re usually female or a minority—just look at a lot of Riot or Blizzard characters.
Big modern cinematics also always focus on female or minority heroes but never white guys being heroes anymore.
Meanwhile, white male characters are often portrayed as older, depressed, or fading out, with their main role being to pass the torch to a younger female or minority character. The other common type is the immature ‘loser’ archetype—like modern Peter Parker, where the joke is always that he’s lame or a manchild. Honestly, I think this shift plays a part in why video games have lost some appeal with younger audiences.
