Well, the nuKratos games are a rough 180 from their predecessors on every level. You had a cruel and constantly angry guy who destroyed greece with his bare hands in the name of revenge, with linear gameplay and edgycool moments.
Now you have old kratos, a guy who is filled with guilt about his past, raises a kid, and thinks twice before killing his enemies(but does the same destructive shit as in the original trilogy). Old gow games worked because they were short, direct and fun. Nu gow games became tedious and convoluted, something that alienated the old gow audience

It actually started from its soidevs. There are some dev interviews which said that with nugow they wanted to follow a more "mature" line of work, because they have grown older and have families now. They wanted the soccermom's respect. They barely want to associate with the edgy kratos.
All that passive aggressiveness towards the old gow and kratos persona can be seen clearly in nuGow games, so some soitubers/soijournos made essays in which they celebrate Kratos lower levels of testosterone, and then pretty much used him as a means to dunk on "toxic incel gamers" that dared to question their moral authority.
Also new gow looks like a soijack, so his image was perfect for old gow fans to make memes out it and shit on those "reborn" cuckhold devs and on those journos/soitubers

It's amazing how everything you mention is about Ragnarok and not GoW4.
GoW4 Kratos had come to terms with who he is and who he was, he resolves that he will always be a monster, reclaims his Blades of Chaos with only a single small pang of guilt. He chooses to be a tame monster a necessary monster, never a good man. He still does what needs to be done, he has just gotten a lot better at recognizing what doesn't need to be done. He rejects his past self only for being Athena's pawn.
Then Ragnarok came around with what feels like a completely different writing team and now he's suddenly marred with self-hatred and a need to change.

Yeah that its true. Ragnarok is where they doubled down on the soidad arc. nuGow 1 was decent in its narrative since it looked like a logical evolution of Kratos's character for a series reboot, but I hated almost everything about nuGoW1's game design.
Then Ragnarok decided to shit on old gow games to "elevate" its narrative, but all it managed to do was to look like impotent, beta rage. The game design is also shit here as well
