It's a shame that the game didn't turn out better.
I really liked the premise. You can suddenly be selected by powerful beings to do a task for them. If you don't do it you'll turn into a monster. If you do it you'll turn into crystal. You have a time limit yet no clear idea of what the task is, but you can grow more powerful than what was otherwise possible.
That's a fun idea. But they just didn't do much interesting with it. Far too much focus on each character's story and the game was way too linear.

FF13 was actually a pretty good game, but it has a literal, sincere, and unironic 30+ hour tutorial. What the fuck would posses them to do that? It's not just the game going open world in the last chapter and we can hand waive it as "Oh that's a nice bonus, but not the real game!" The game will pick your party, those character's jobs, how you spend your skill points, and even how many skill points you're allowed to spend until like chapater 12. I can figure out who I want as a ravager or whatever by chapter 3, I promise. I know if I want to spend my points on HP or Strength.
