My biggest problem with this game is that it's the definition of "wide as ocean, deep as puddle." and all the dlcs only seem to make the ocean wider.

At least it started like that, and he does claim to be spooked at some point, but the 'finished' version of the game was just so far removed from what he had originally, and didn't resemble his original future plans. Double that with a lack of transparency and you got people also suspecting the entire thing is a psyop.

Triumph took the basics for Age of Wonders and decided to turn it into a psuedo-RPG with strategy elements instead. So you don't get factions or races with more defined lore or even gameplay styles in favor of cultures that can be played off kilter from their original base design, with races that look nothing like what you started with. It went full "do whatever you want" customization but eventually you'll just keep using the same series of tomes on the same culture because it works the best on the majority of games. At that point, I'd rather just have my Theocrat Orcs or Dreadnought Humans back.

Sometimes you just want simple though. I still play HoMM3 because its not complex, AoE4 is my perfect "I just want to make a gimmick campaign and see how goes" where I do shit like make a bunch of undead factions, give the realm undead so everything keeps reanimating and try to survive let alone win against them. Try out the Dominions 5 if you want something so deep you will probably play 2 hours of it and quit because you need to go read an instruction manual, and then never play the game because youre paralyzed by choice.

It's the usual problem seen where they want to have both a multiplayer community and a single community in a 4x game which never works out right due to how you have to balance things like quality of life features with meta gaming. They should have either done MP focused (AoE3) or single player focus (AoE: Planetfall) this attempt at both is just mucking up the quality.
