It still exists but barely and it's slowly dying. It's more insane to me that literally NOBODY has tried to do a MMOFPS since. Factually, it's the only "active" game of its genre right now.

I think I stopped playing when they added the third continent, had a lot of fun though, but nothing lasts forever. Not like large scale FPS was a popular genre before PS2. I only got into it because I used to play Tribes which had a massive scale for its time and PS2 seemed similar enough.

Massive 100+ player battles over some base in planetside 2 are still some of my favorite gaming experiences ever.
The only thing that came close to that was bf3 (and bf1 in a limited way).

I just hope bf6 is alright enough maybe then I'll get a little bit of that feeling again

Something tells me the NC Jackhammer is still fucking bullshit and the TR are still vastly a faction of people that prefer pain to winning and the VS are still basically furfags.

MMOs died shortly after the game released for complicated reasons. The moment making something an MMO wasn't a good investment, it became a very bad investment. Because scale is technically demanding and expensive. MMOFPS never took off because you are multiplying this technical difficulty with the technical difficulty of FPS mechanics. The fact that the planetside games ever existed is the real "why". Even though they were awesome.

I remember the server smashes were incredibly autistic but kind of cool and a big deal at the same time, I had fun with the game but I became a bit too much of a tryhard A2A pilot

Every vehicle was really fun in this game, they did a great job. Even being a troop transporter. And being able to customise the vehicles with decals was cool as fuck

Just like the BF games they listened to the community and nerfed literally everything. From the way flying worked, to the way the content worked, the layout of bases, and of course all the weapons. Theres almost no difference between factions because people scream and cry and shit themselves if there are differences. The Crown was ruined. As always I blame devs listening to garbage baby faggot whiny communities.

Man, the lighting with racer chasis, AP cannon and maxed out stealth was great fun. Speeding behind the frontlines and taking out oblivious hostile vehicles even before they could see the action was the tits.
I've been meaning to pick the game up for couple of years, but i dunno, maybe i should just cherish the good memories i had with it.

I played near release, it was a disappointment compared to PS1 in largepart because of the predatory micro transactions and they were quick to quash any farming methods or unique play styles. Apparently it did not get much better, with a lot of the weapons that you buy being straight up better and all factions had access to them making them feel samey. While PS1 was a zerg rush, the grind was almost non existent since you could just respec after a certain amount of time.

The game with the 128 mode sank like the Titanic and the new one that everyone keeps sucking off backtracked by making 64 players the upper limit and focused the beta around close quarters infantry maps.
128 is not MMOFPS. Even fucking Tribes 2 had as much. It's just enough to make combined arms gameplay work somewhat.

Because Planetside is the only series that seriously did it, twice, and it underperformed both times. They are inherently risky, probably high budget, and there's no obvious good one to copy.
