Having a heart. Him developing paternal love for the Hollow Knight and thus establishing a bond between the two meant that his son's purpose of being an emotionless blank slate meant to contain the Radiance was doomed to fail and the deaths of his countless void-infused children were all for nothing (or at least it would have been, if not for the Knight/Little Ghost). But who can blame a father for loving his son?

When you think about it, the Moths are the ones truly at fault for the events of the game by abandoning the Radiance so readily
The Pale King was fully able and willing to coexist with other societies and high beings, like Unn and their Greenpath, or the Mantis Lords; but the fact that the Moth tribe turned their gaze away from their own creator and god when the Wyrm showed up meant that the Radiance's only remaining means of manifesting itself into the material word was to haunt the dreams of the bugs in Hallownest through essence, which caused the infection
