I wonder how, and what do you think you know.

That being said, MGS is a truly epic, fascinating saga, that is also a joy to play. (You)r input, you overcoming the challenges, play as big part in the Metal Gear experience as the "plot" itself.
There's also plenty of curious subtext that may truly make you think about life.

Not only that, but I find Kojima to be one of the few people on the industry that dare to challenge the (fundamentally American) black & white "good vs evil" tropes. The series is full of characters practically working towards the same goal, but with completely different means and priorities, resulting friction between the factions and friends alike that may escalate.

tl;dr: go and play the original MGS1, and see for yourself whether you can get behind the series' vibes.

People who only play videogames, in most cases, have never picked up a novel, and games, movies, cartoons and comics are all the "writing" they know. Entertaiment slop is directed to the lowest common denominator, and games don't even need an story in the first place, so the best they can do it's shounen anime tier plot adapted to the style of the current safest political and social climate. MGS was good for what games can do, but if you wanted a truly "good story" from this medium, you will be forever dissapointed.

This is exactly what happened with Last of Us 2 on this board. Everyone decided they hated it and nobody had played it. Turns out the storytelling they were shitting on was easily the best of any game, but it was too late to backtrack so everyone doubled down.

TLOU2 story is really bad and full of plot holes, character motivations that are paper thin, character who abandon their previous arc progression for the sake of pushing a specific narrative, and new characters who act like complete retards just for the sake of the plot. It’s stealth and enemy reaction to that stealth is one of its higher features, imo.
