I like the game but I do have a few gripes
After a point, I'm constantly damage capping and the game is a bit too easy, I have a safe set up where even if I fuck up the parries Im still mostly okay.
Then I turn on expert and suddenly everything one-shots me and the enemy health barely gets bigger (which is my main gripe on normal, Im burning boss health bars so fast)
To add on to this, Maelle is just so incredibly fucking broken right out of the gate and up through the whole game
While the parry/dodge mechanic is cool and all, I am getting tired of devs thinking the way to spice up turn based RPGs is to make it more active by adding qtes and shit, and honestly the parry stuff is starting to get exhausting because I'm seeing perfect parry/dodge mechanics in almost every video game now
The environments, while beautiful, are a bit visually cluttered to the point where sometimes it was hard to tell what's going on, and sometimes overworld enemies are hard to see at a glance because they just blend into the environment
Story is very good though, voice acting is great, and the music is amazing. Good first step for these devs. So far it is my second favorite game of 2025, the first being death stranding 2

It seems there are two distinct camps on 4chan when it comes to this game as always, but I honestly see where the negative camp comes from, and I don't even think they disagree about the quality of the game. I think the issue is what it's being compared to.

It is absolutely a masterpiece by modern AAA standards, it's a complete breath of fresh air given that it's a big budget game without loot crates and DLC, no multiplayer, limited DEI, novel development practices, and some risks taken. It's rare to see a major game produced like this these days, made with an artistic vision in mind and not compromised to appease clueless investors.

The issue though is in the first line there - by modern AAA standards. Some anons just don't want to accept that as a standard. I have a feeling most of us would rank it similarly in a qualitative list of every game ever. The difference is those of us who like the game will point at this game being above pretty much every other mainstream title of recent years as a merit to its name and a solid step in the right direction. Its detractors however would focus on the fact that even being a cut above modern AAA games it still falls below older games and a bunch of lower budget indie games to sit in the middle of the pile. It's a matter of perspective, a glass half full type situation.

We used to get several games like this every year. Just a bespoke single-player RPG with high emotional intensity. Last game that gave me an even somewhat similar experience was Baldur's Gate 3 and even that I don't think quite lived up to this standard. COE33 felt like it could have been made in the 00s alongside Final Fantasy 10 and Lost Odyssey.

90% of the characters are built off the same two base models. Sophie, sciel, maelle, clea are all based off the same sculpt. There's npcs that look basically exactly the same as gustave. It becomes really obvious whenever they all make this same :/ face (they do this all the time) with puckered lips.

It's an 8/10 game. It lacks enemy variety. Has too few dungeons. The combat is gimmicky and just becomes tedious while also making everything too easy. Half the cast cease to have a point in the story 2 minutes after they are introduced. The overworld music in Act 3 is pure fucking cancer in audio form. There has been more thought and discussion about the implications of E33's world than the actual people living in it had, which means, much like the dropped characters, the writer(s) didn't bother to think that deeply about what exactly they made, to instead focus on a family drama where the main villain is the only actual likeable member of the family.
