When will AI party members/NPCs in videogames become standard?
Not just like these mods we're seeing for stuff like Skyrim. But when pretty much every game with characters you can talk to and interact with be controlled, voiced and acted by AI?

Trannies are too low-IQ to implement it. Also you need lots of VRAM to have all NPCs be AI

(Current prototypes on this are just one AI pretending to be lots of different people)

Literally the only thing I look forward to AI AI-generated slop. Turning NPCs into chatbots would be a leap akin to 3D gaming.

There was a Ubisoft tech demo doing this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1od2pIs9220&pp=ygUOdWJpc29mdCBhaSBucGM%3D

My bet, Half Life 3 will be the game that pioneers it. I do wonder if such tech is possible offline.

You'd need a constant connection to chatgpt or whatever bot is doing the talking. Local stuff might work but it'll be lower quality (might not be an issue if it's done right) and resource heavy.

The problem is how to you get the AI to stay in character? How do you make it dynamic without just being blatantly AI? AI party members in shooters or as generic followers that are 1 to 1 stand ins for online play could be a thing pretty soon, but i don't see them replacing actually written characters for awhile.

Most likely in 10ish years.
It will also not be nearly as open ended as you imagine. You are not gonna be able to walk up to Mercy in Overwatch 4 and ask her about her pubic hair. You won't be able to goat Wakka into saying racist things in the FFX remake. You won't be able to talk with Ada about rearranging her sideways gook guts in RE13. You are not gonna be able to nerd out with Para-Medic about Godzilla movies in MGS6.

Considering these are still characters, asking Mercy about her pubic hair should only warrant you the same response as asking any stranger woman on the street about her pubic hair.

True, but a real life woman would have some kind of reaction. What Mercy(or any other character) would do when asked something outside of the guidelines would most likely respond with confusion/not understanding or a generic reply that basically says the guidelines won't allow them to interact with such topics.

I think she should only act offended and stay in character, no matter how many times you insist.

NPC AI characters shouldn't be dolls for the player to act as Gods and make them whatever they want (unless that is the point).

That would be ideal, but I think we both know any game made by a major studio(who would be the only ones who could even afford such an endeavor) that features AI powered NPCs would play it extremely safe. They would not even allow any kind of reaction besides PR speak or ignorance.

Considering the lowering costs of the tech, it will be a matter of a decade until we even see indies using this kind of tech.

Photorealistic 3D was something only for AAA and look where we are now.

That is usually the case for every tech, people find out new ways to streamline and cut costs.

Napoleon III famously used aluminum utensils for himself and his most honored guests, as aluminum was an extremely expensive and rare metal in his time, even more valuable than gold. Now we litter the streets with cans made of it because we managed to artificially create it.

Just compare phones nowadays are cheaper and superior to the supercomputers we had 50 years ago.
