Yeah and come to think of it, overall reception has been pretty mild. People are waiting for dlc as a kind of fix not a "just more". Most people dont like the open world and most dont like intermissions. Making a bunch of new tracks would also (prolly) mean more intermissions, so way more work then a standard track pack.
If I were them, I would drop the project as a whole and let your other games pick up the slack.

before Mario Kart World was shown or announced I always thought the next MK game would have a story mode with a huge world map like the 2D and 3D games, and that it'd have a full story mode with bosses and such.

It's just such a shame that they created all those models and animations for the different overworld enemies across the map, but you can't interact meaningfully with any of them, they're just window dressing.

I would like to see some sort of story/boss mode where you battle some of these giant enemies with unique cutscenes, a bit like the bosses from Mario Kart DS, but I know it won't happen

What's the point of making a stupidly big overworld just to have it be empty and not be able to interact with anything, this game is just plain depressing.

The only crossover I'll accept is a Double Dash sequel that borrows from DK, Wario, and Mario spinoffs. At the very least, you've got 100 characters right there but the challenging part is making sure they all pair well with each other thematically. I'd happily post the roster I'm currently working on for fun right now but you just know the Switch 2 era is going to add more characters to the Mario universe so I'll have to update it from time to time. I think it's pretty likely that this game will get DLC. It's a game they want to be evergreen for the entirety of the Switch 2's life cycle, and is also an incentive to pay for the online subscription.
I think the bigger question is: will it be paid DLC? The game is already retailing at an above-average price. Making the DLC free would get more people on board with that. But of course people will pay up anyway, so I don't even know why I'm questioning it.

It comes down to the lack of Battle content in a post-8DX world. I understand that battle mode isn't the most popular mode for a racing game, but only releasing a new Mario Kart with just Coin Runner and Battle Balloon is simply disappointing. There are so many ideas that could be done with an open world battle mode. Competitive and cooperative fights with real players and computers. It would be madness. It would be glorious. But instead, we got the barebones. It's just sad.

As someone who hasn't really played a MK game since Wii, why are all the items automatically held behind you now and you can't strategically use them? I can lose all my 3 shells just by running into one person.

Where's the fake item boxes? Where's the SOUL?

Do the bombs no longer automatically explode if someone is near? Seems impossible to hit anyone with that now unless they run into you from behind (and the explosion should totally affect you too).
