Why are gamers so scared of spiders? I can't believe that gamers, these violent and psychotic people can be fine with blood, gore, dismemberment, nudity and much worse but draw the line at spiders? C'mon guys, they're small and harmless creatures, man up.

Lumines Arise tries to step it up by having both a toggle for spiders, and also snakes.

It's a vanishingly small subset of extremely sheltered pussies who are so arachnophobic that spiders in non-horror videogames will cause them to have a panic attack and be unable to play the game.
But catering to groups who are so statistically insignificant as to be rounding errors in order to earn brownie points with the inclusivity crowd is hip and cool, and arachnophobia mode is less politically charged than xe/xer mode, so it's an easy win for the marketing people.
It's all just a cynical numbers game.

A lot of them are concern trolls.
They go into forums like Resetera and wring their hands whether a game has spiders or not and play it up.
Most memorable for me was RE3Remake and people re-assuring a concern troll that the enemies are AkShUAlLy just mutant fleas hoping the person bought the game.

skyrim had arachnophobia mods made quite early after release, it's not just devs or marketing doing this
