I don't think it's too bad but there are quite a few questionable design decisions present:
>Everything costs beads
>Not every enemy gives beads on death
>Lose all beads if you die before you retrieve the cocoon
>Some bosses require a run-back
>A lot of enemies and all bosses (along with some environmental hazards) take off 2 masks
All of this compounds for a frustrating experience but still overall enjoyable (it's wearing thin though). I just fought a boss at the end of Chapter 1 that was really fun, but just getting back to it was a pain, and that sucks because it made the experience terrible as the boss can quickly kill you so until you learn the moveset you're just subjected to a bunch of runbacks.
