Theoretically, the Lord of the Rings was an open world adventure that Frodo, to the best of his ability, beelined straight towards the goal.

His mission wastime sensitive and it did not make sense to dillydally looking for alternate questlines to grow relations with people or build an arsenal of powerful magical items.

How many timed open world games are there? Only one I can think of is Fallout 1 for the first part, and even that could be extended and was only part of the narrative.

People hate time sensitive missions though, the complaints never stop when a game implements them.

it would have to be less of a Dead Rising and more of a Persona then

In Might&Magic VII For Blood and Honor each of the "war" quests has its own timer, usually around 28 in-game days, and they are independent of each other. I'd be all in for something like that because it makes sense and it's not too aggressive.

Maybe the giant inhospitable frozen mountain range it was built in? It's not like they had mountain gear or heavy clothing or oxygen tanks with them.

I would just bring a less lazy wizard. This is what happens to wizards that don't go to some sort of college, if someone wants to fling magic in my party they better show me that diploma.

Okay then how about a game with linear levels but you choose the the route to take through each section of the world. Say there is a mountain pass you can take the high or low route. High route includes more platforming and extreme weather which increase endurance and stamnia attributes. The low path is littered with monsters so you increase strength and stamina.

Each path also has unique items so if you skip a section that item will not be found elsewhere in the game thus effecting your build as well.

Everyone else was doing the side quests for Frodo.

>try to do the funny and teleport to the summit of mount doom
>the eye sees the magic as its being cast and assembles a rape squad of Nazgul at the exit point
There's a reason he kept all his magic subtle, and it's not just because Eru is a non-interventionist god.

You'd think a servant of the secret fire could secretly warm a few people on a cold mountain

Frodo gets this far in the first book, and it takes two more books for him to go the rest of the way.
Scholars attribute this to Frodo being too underleveled to do any loyalty quests, resulting in him being separated from nearly all of his party members.
