To me it seems more like the X gain memories but not the personality related to those memories. It's less "oh yeah this happened to me once" and more just downloading the raw data from those memories without the emotional side or whatever. If the X actually became the person they copied, SA-X would have been helping you throughout fusion and QR-X wouldn't have reactivated the Emmis. QR-X seems to be a special case where his soul temporarily took control of the X copy or something. RB-X doesn't seem to be himself at all. Sure, he says his catchphrase, but he's clearly just a mindless beast like any other X we fight.

This is pure headcanon but I think that QR-X initially did it because the X in it was hoping they would be able to kill her. But the longer he lingered in that form the longer he began to think about things and decided he would help Samus at the end. Perhaps even gaining true sapience and morality.

Replying to myself here, I think the X when they take the form of something with combat ability (See Raven Beak and Samus) they focus purely on their power. When they take on the form of something weaker, like Quiet Robe or the human in Fusion they focus on their intelligence and contemplative abilities. SA-X doesn't need to really think about anything, it can just power bomb the shit out of everything or super missile it.
