I never played Diablo 2 before, should I go with the recent "Resurrected" version or the original. Are there any mandatory mods for the original in regards to bug fixes/QoL additions? Thanks in advance

as someone who doesn't like the new version, the new version's fine and most of my complaints are nitpicks about balance changes and shit. if you do want to play the og version, plugy is kind of nice.

Play resurrected. It has all the QoL you need and you can switch between new and old graphics. It's also the only version people play if you actually care about trading.

What should be mandatory is you should read up on a FAQ about the game's mechanics, what you should avoid as a beginner, and find a build guide for something that sounds for for you. If you don't do these things you will probably get filtered and frustrated and quit the game because you gimped your character and now mobs are instantly deleting you with 2 hits.

Resurrected is better, yes. Ignore all of the "HURDUR NEW BAD OLD GOOD" faggots.

If pick a really good build like Zealot Paladin you basically will completely plow through normal mode with maybe only trouble with bosses and a few bullshit mob spawns depending on if you roll good loot or not. The game only gets somewhat demanding with how good your drops and build are in Nightmare mode which is the "real" game

If you are playing blind you literally make all the mistakes every new diablo player made 25 years ago and end up just looking up a guide and respeccing anyways.

The game basically is just built around centering around 1 or 2 primary skills and getting all the synergies around that, so if you spread your points around on random shit you will die constantly. Also noobs usually put points into stupid shit like energy, when vitality is the most important stat, and every other point should be put into just meeting item reqs

At what point should I replace this on a pally?

The game was been drastically rebalanced since when it came out. There are loads and loads of "noob traps" that can seriously gimp your character, like investing in any stat besides Vitality, or leveling up weapons specializations as Barbarian.

If you want a good time with minimal "fuck you" roadblocks, play summon necromancer. It's a ton of fun to roll up with your goon squad, drop a few curses, and watch them go to work.

anons did someone ever make a mod to make the characters less ugly that could be used online? i've been getting the d2 itch again recently, it'd be nice to be able to play the active version without the shitty redesigns

OP no matter what you do please just have fun with the game the first time through. Don't look at guides or bother with the last 25+ years of knowledge. When this game came out it was KINO compared to everything else. The cutscenes, the tone, the mood, the sense of dread, everything was awesome. It was completely unmatched by it's contemporaries. It's also fun as hell just to go through and fight stuff and level up and find new gear. You owe yourself to enjoy one of the best games ever made, at least until you beat the default Normal and New Game+ (Nightmare) difficulty. Once you get to Hell Difficulty (NG++) then sure go ahead and look at a guide. DO NOT DO THIS AT ALL UNTIL THEN. Don't look up which characters do what, don't look up anything. Just enjoy the game and hopefully find another person or two willing to play through the whole game with you. There will be plenty of time to autistically min/max everything down the line, just enjoy the story and god-tier voice acting. Eventually you will rapid fire click through every conversation so fast on your 3rd or more playthrough that you should not take anything for granted the first time through, you owe it to yourself.

What weapon you make rune words in matters a lot. For damage reasons and as well as attack frame reasons. D2 animations work on frames. +20% attack speed for example DOES NOT actually increase your attack speed by 20%. Each weapon has its own inherent attack speed so there is an ideal weapon for hitting breakpoints easily.

That's only the case if you want to farm Hell with any kind of efficiency. If you want to actually play and beat the game (Normal, Nightmare, and then Hell) then you don't need to do much at all in terms of rolling a perfect build.

Perfect, no, but even nightmare is likely to be a hard stop if you don't invest in sensible skills/synergies and/or gear appropriately.
You can get through normal with putting skills across trees for varied options, but you aren't going to be able to kill things without extreme difficulty or cheese without having a reasonable build, or a very strongly built merc.
Hell will just one tap you, and make enough enemies immune to you that you won't survive without planning.

If you can, try Project Diablo 2, it completely replaced vanilla for me

Project Diablo 2 has like 1000 players online. It's actively developed, and there's new seasons every few months. PD2 is a mod that makes changes as if D2 were actively developed.

The original looks better imo but that’s becuase im a sucker for the pixelated pseudo-3d look. Resurrected is perfectly fine and the ideal version if you want to engage in multiplayer

I'd rather play D3 than D2R

but PD2 is best. Maybe D2R would be good if it ever gets PD2R but knowing Blizzard it's locked the fuck down.

you will need some patience with act 3 hell, possibly investing in some poison skill

This, I came back after a long long time not playing D2. I tried doing it and thought my memory was bad...wasn't till I tried adjusting it in single-player that it worked...that is how long it has been since I played, you used to be able to do that on battle.net characters.

That and I remember near infinitely piercing arrows with that one crossbow
