I only use it for golden souls. Most of the good doom content is wads that can be better played on something. Ashes is too similiar to a build engine game, and predictably all style and no substance.

Not really interested in the commercial games made with it, but I've been so spoiled by the sheer amount of gameplay mods that I rarely play vanilla these days.

Not sold on it, it attracts the type of people who mod cj from gta sa into every game. Ashes and the golden souls are decent series but sometimes simplicity is better, load Woof! and cacowards WADs.

Like Doom? Yeah.
I know, I know. A lot of other games use Doom as an engine. But I've found that I end up avoiding them because most of them are annoying; they insist on coming with a separate and usually outdated copy of GZDoom, which I already have, and some of them are actually Doom mods pretending to be standalone games so they also come with a copy of Freedoom under the hood, which I also already have. These games should give me an option to just download their WAD file.
Anyway, GZDoom is fine, but the default settings aren't.

Never played Doom, should I start with GZdoom?
And what GZDoom wads would you recommend? There is like an ocean of them, so I have no idea what to pick

No, and don't start with fan wads, play doom and doom 2. The steam nightdive version is fine, if you don't want to pay for it pick any relatively faithful source port

i keep trying to switch to nugget or cherrydoom for basic wads but i just don't like the way doom's fake shadows and darkness work
gzdoom smooths them away and it looks way fucking better

important thing when playing Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 for the first time and fucking around with any sourceports that add extended controls

-aim is locked to horizontal in Doom, there is no manual vertical aiming

my personal recommendations
play the doom 1 + 2 port on steam
play episodes 1 and 2 of doom 1 (knee deep in the dead, shores of hell)
play doom 2 until you get bored (you will get bored in the city levels probably)
after that play plutonia, legacy of rust, or check out some of the popular fan wads, ie anclient aliens, going down, eviternity, BTSX

If you want to have an experience as close to vanilla but with modern resolution and controls,i'd recommend something liek Crispy Doom
You'll have to use a setup programm, but it's very easy to use.
