Does anyone else feel like there's too much yapping in video games today? I recently played through digimon world on playstation 1 and then afterwards I played digimon world re:digitize. The difference is actually insane. In the original DW game you basically have like 5 text boxes and then the game starts. You can do whatever you want. In DW redigitize you get booted into a tutorial session, followed by an exposition dump, handholding quests, constant mails to track your progress. I've had that same problem when I tried playing some fucking farming game a few months back, it felt like you'd just never leave the fucking tutorial. 3 hours in you'd still unlock new mechanics when the right NPC decided it was time to explain shit to you.

Yip.
No one ever gets to the point or ever keeps quiet.
Someone said it was so that the player feels like he is socialising(like how players do when playing mp/co-op).

And then there's also the issue of those that failed at making it in hollywood, infecting games with their neverending dialogues about all kinds of rubbish that no-one cares about.

What a gay time to be alive.

I don't mind infodumps if they are on demand. Like lore books or shit. If I'm interested then I will read shit, but don't unlock basic game mechanics like the vendor for different kinds of seeds in a farming game behind 5 days of fully scripted gameplay where every day I get the explanation of 1 fucking tool or some shit.

Yeah, I also hate RE:digitized. It's also something you can see in Monster Rancher. In MR2, there's barely any talking and dialogue, then 20 years later in UKMR every other week starts with a little back and forth.

Pretty sure the village elder yaps to you in World, if you want more complex stories with literally more than one character then yes nigger, they need to talk, they need to discuss and argue and explain their motivations so (You) have an extrinsic motivation

Digimon World isn't a game that should have a complex story.

You just need to play more games you stupid negro. Ps1 is full of jrpgs with gigantic text boxes. A good example is Valkiryie Profiles, the game has a gigantic intro and it take hours before you get full control. I still love it though.

There is a difference between the initial
>hey welcome to this world, there's your partner, now bring digimons back to town
and
>agumen battle tutorial -> exposition dump about more humans -> meet the humans and learn their personality -> small tutorial quests -> rest of the game locked behind progressing the story

i enjoy my overally long writing in video games actually i enjoy sitting back and hearing info dumps about the world but game mechanic dumps is kinda boring glory to the CCP

JRPGs entire selling point is that you play the fucking story. Even the new mario games have fucking intro cutscenes and tutorials these days. Just compare fucking mario 64 to mario galaxy / sunshine.

I'm from the "the most interesting stories are the ones the players themselves tell" school of game design; the actual game's world should just be set dressing for me to tell my own story, not whatever some overpaid Californian college grad thinks is interesting.
Glory to the CCP.

You still need to contextualize battles and allies and keep the setting interesting, and you need to yap for that.

And digimon world 1 still did it better than redigitize with 1/10 of the exposition dump.

You only need like 3 sentences. Shit like RE will give you like 18. Also, you can skip the excess stuff in 1. I don't have a digimon 2hu crossover pic, so take this.

I have very little patience for games with overly long tutorials and intro sequences. I can tolerate exposition dumps but only if the world building is actually genuinely engaging and creative, I can't even think of any recent examples off the top of my head. If it's just bogstandard fantasy shit I will completely zone out. Maybe it's a me problem and I just have ADD.

Yea, I can't stand Visual Novels. And that seems to be the trend with queers and old hag game developers.
It was different when it was just text and somebody with actual talent was writing the story.

Okay, here goes.
There's way too much tutorializing in most modern video games, and I agree that the approach developers take to "hide" it by wrapping it in gratuitous exposition is thoroughly unfun.
I think that this problem came about for two reasons: big developers only stand to make more money by continually widening the tent and catering to more players who can't be bothered to consciously engage with video games, and the death of manuals has left nowhere but the game itself as the only place where any tutorials or instructions can be seen at all by most players. Most digital manuals are, at best, reiterations of in-game popups.
