It is a recovery. There's more than one way to make a mistake and in the video he showed this recovery does work for slipping and not hitting jump in time. The recovery doesn't have to work for every single fail scenario for it to be valid.

The first one is an objectively higher difficulty than the second one. The pillars feature the same block many times and you have to figure out which block you can jump on. When mario and the screen will move, it is even harder to focus on the right block, since they all look the same, but only one of them is the correct one.
The second one does not need any thought, you see clearly what to do here. Easy to focus, no distractions.

I don't understand why they made movement in SMB games is so floaty and slippery. Mario retains insane amount of momentum which always throws me off because most platformers are the opposite and you keep almost no momentum the moment you're not airborne.
And you can tell it's a deliberate decision. For some reason Mario Land games aren't like that. Neither are any other 2D Nintendo games like Kirby or Metroid. Even 3D Marios do that.

A recovery implies a mistake occurred in the first place. Landing on that block is the intended way to do it so you don't need to recover from that state. You can just jump to the pair of blocks next to it.
