It just sounds to me like IDW still doesn't really understand what the relationship is between Shadow and Sonic. Shadow isn't really Sonic's friend, but they're not enemies either. Sonic isn't someone that Shadow has any particular interest in using lethal force on unless circumstances force him to escalate to that extent. If they must fight, they'll fight, but they'll also stop before things go too far. Why pull a sword in a situation like this?

You have to remember that while Shadow isn't Sonic's friend he doesn't hate him, he wants to surpass him. That means fighting fair. So no guns, no swords, no other weapons if Sonic isn't also using them. Chaos powers are an exception since that's the only thing beyond CQC that Sonic really uses.
It's like the "why is Sonic driving a car when he can run faster" It's not about getting an easy win, it's about proving you're the best in every way. If that means driving then so be it, if that means going hand to hand instead of using any weapon available to you then so be it.

Either way, it's not really in character for him to charge at Sonic with a weapon out of the blue, even if it's in the middle of a fight. Sonic showcases a bunch of unusual powers in Sonic Frontiers as well, even without the use of an emerald. Personally, I found them kind of awkward. Depends on what you mean by Sega tard-wrangling them in the context of the 90s, because everything was on SoA's end trying to branch Sonic out into as many fields as possible. Comics, cartoons, books, stage shows, and they were all roughly connected because SoA had the foresight to actually sign contracts that gave them ownership over all of it, so they could turn around and re-license it all back out. It wasn't until Adventure that SoJ came along and tossed everything out. So if you go by that, SoJ would've canned the Archie comic around Adventure, maybe to replace it with a new Sonic Adventure comic, but either way the old fanbase would've already reached critical mass to influence the Sonic fandom the way they have today. And if SoJ did allow a new Sonic Adventure comic in the new modern continuity, it would've made the fandom even worse with old comic vs. new comic shitflinging.

If you mean SoJ tard-wrangling then we're talking about an alternate universe where SoJ didn't let SoA have the autonomy they needed and the Genesis would've been a minor blip in history with Sega going back to arcade games without even bothering with the Saturn, let alone the Dreamcast.
