When did the souls games become slop?
the combat was always fun (not roll spam) but with elden ring and nightreign, the focus shifted from combat to spectacle where you wait for the boss to do his anime attack just to hit his ass once or twice, while sekiro was the best soulslike combat they ever designed, mostly because you didnt have any crutches.

TLDR: What went so WRONG?

You don't need to wait for the attacks to finish if you're good enough.
The "openers" are there for the average /v/dditor so they can get a hit in after their cerebral palsy-stricken retardbrains register that the enemy is not moving

The souls games became slop when the focus went from exploration and adventure to combat.

3 is probably the point where you could tell they stopped caring about atmosphere. They got it back with Bloodborne but Elden Ring came back with their old habits.

DaS1 > Bloodborne > DeS > Elden Ring > DaS2 > DaS3

Their first actual slop game is ER Nightreign. Original ER was merely setting the foothold for it, but was not quite there yet, maybe just a few bosses. Ultimately, the game was still about exploration first and foremost.

But all in all, Souls-like had a decent start with DS, but was still trying to find its way and understand what it wants to be. DS I and DS II were those exploration phases. Then went on to solidify the formula with DS III, made a few side steps with Bloodborne and Sekiro, peaking with the latter. Then culminated their chosen formula with ER and then it kind of just became redundant. ER is how they wanted all DS games to play like, so there is not much to improve from here and they just started making bosses more flashy and spectacular, which is what we see in new ER now.

Sekiro is still their best game.
