gen 3 is when the game became palatable. gen 1 can be fun as a novelty, to explore all of its quirks and glitches, and deserves respect as the original. gen 2 is dogshit.

Gen 3 all around is just super solid.
Ruby/Sapphire were the best original gen, best music, best overall palette and variation for it's environments. Fire Red and it's postgame was great. Emerald had a ton of playability post E4 and goals to work towards.
I also really liked Gen 1 and Gen 2. I hated 4 and 5 when they initially released.

I have always thought it was the best. I'd welcome some of the qol improvements from later games but with the exact same graphics and world of Kanto which I am sure some rom hack must have done by this point.

i don't think they're comparable, online multiplayer is nowhere near the same experience as local multiplayer. modern fighting games suffer from this same issue, fighting games simply aren't fun online even though on paper its the same thing. trading pokemon online removes all their soul they just become a statistic

nah. Gen 2 was better, because it was literally a new game and Gen 1 fused together. Pokémon Crystal was where the franchise peaked. Gen 3 was acceptable but not as impressive as Gen 2, and every Gen from 4 onwards just gets progressively worse.

A sequel to Snap was finally made and released in 2021 (the name being New Pokemon Snap is pretty fucking dumb, honestly), and it unironically is probably the most beautiful looking Pokemon game to date, probably because Bandai Namco actually developed it rather than Game Freak.

Other than that, there was:
>Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness, 2 GameCube games where every battle is a double battle, and every Pokemon you can catch is Shadow Pokemon you steal from enemy trainers.
>Mystery Dungeon series, roguelite dungeon-crawlers that have you play as the Pokemon themselves, with really good stories.
>Pokemon Ranger trilogy, action RPGs for the DS that had you capture Pokemon by drawing rings around them, and using them to get past environmental obstacles or capture other Pokemon.
>Pokken Tournament, also developed by Bandai Namco, is basically Tekken but Pokemon, with some differences from the former series.

It was packed with garbage. The best parts of Gen 2 were random contests and unique spawns on different days of the week, otherwise its twice as long as gen 1 with not even half the meaningful locations or progression. It was hollow grinding and then Kanto was a slap in the face with being empty and not even 1/3rd its original size.
