Religion is just the same kind of thing as political ideology, it accomplish the exact same purpose, and it always boils down to "so, some dude say this and that, and you have to follow suit". It's a reduction, but it what it is in simple terms. Any well educated individual acknowledge this, and live his life at line with it in order to accomplish whatever it's important to him, but some people never realize that they have free will and make a sacred cow of those dogmas. Religion is not really necessary FOR THE INDIVIDUAL, and he has no need of it by it's own, but it can be a tool as any other if he decides to use it for that.
