There isn't really "objectively the best one" different militaries have different priorities and strategies they use so they tend to employ different kinds of firearms best suited to the way they conduct themselves. Sometimes it's an issue of funding, other times it's an issue of strategy. The AK 12 isn't better or worse of a gun than the M4 as a standard issue rifle, one is designed to be more accurate the other is designed to be more reliable the US and Russia just have different priorities when it comes to their military.

7.62 has more armor penetration and dropping power since it has more mass, so it is a more powerful round it just doesn't have the same level of wounding as much as 5.56 since it travels faster and has less mass leading to fragmentation. So 7.62 is the more "powerful" round. Both rounds have their place which is why the m60 and m24 use 7.62 and modern standard issues rifles like the m4 uses 5.56 while the Russians now use 5.45 for the ak12 which is essentially the same

I like both guns but if I'm out in muddy ass Eastesrn Europe i would much rather have an AK. A lot of Americans soldiers in Vietnam prized having access to AK's especially since that first gen of Ar's were notoriously horrible at handling bad conditions

The IRA really didn't kill that many people, neither did the UVF, there were like 3,000 deaths from the troubles overall , almost all men and 50k wounded specifically because the IRA would send out warnings for a lot of their bombings for people to attempt to clear the area. Their whole strategy was just to make the conflict as costly for the British as possible monetarily, which still failed but it's why very few people actually died with a vast majority just wounded

It would have been far, far better to just take a more tradition design and adapt it for caseless ammo, rather than the foolishness they came up with and luckily had the decentcy to not put into production.
