Writing a strong, attractive, female protagonist that doesn’t piss off the entire gaming community seems impossible.

It's 100% possible. Estelle in Trails in the Sky is the perfect example.
The "impossible" part is western writers NOT just writing an angry, bossy cunt and confusing that for a 'strong female character'. Yes, it IS possible for a character to be confident without trying to belittle those around her.

It wasn't that hard before Guardians of the Galaxy.

Just have a few extensive camera looks at her plump ass. Then have her captured, beaten, and raped with it heavily implied she was raped up said plump ass. Have her act as a submissive darling afterward.

no it wouldn't because they both suit the purpose of the story. modern writers don't know how to characterize they should honestly study tropes with how bad they have been delivering to at least understand why their 'subverting' is a trope in itself they poorly misuse all the time.
Like repeatedly making bad jokes and forcing the crowd to accept it through external means than the work they present.

Because there was a lot of whining about how female characters (usually not protagonists though) like Peach are attached to a male character who is the protagonist, and who's job it is to rescue the girl (who can't do it independently, because, y'know she's been kidnapped or whatever). So peope whined that such characters were weak (can't save themselves, nevermind that men in the same position can't either), dependent (needs help with something in the narrative, usually being rescued) and, uh, attractive (because men and women like saving pretty women and Peach being pretty makes the 'reward' of saving her better) and other women being prettier is a big no-no, even if they aren't even real.

The modern audience (who aren't 'half' the audience) will celebrate and cheer for anything thrown at them from mainstream devs. Except if she's hot like Stallar Blade.

That's because they always ruin it one way or another, like the following following:
>The character is gay, bi or slutty overboard
>The character is a bitchy girlboss who constantly has to remind the player and the NPC in the world how she's better
>The character is masculinized as much as possible because the devs are subtly telling women that they can't be good protagonists unless they're manly in both behavior and looks
>The character is feminized to the point where it just doesn't make sense to have such a total bimbo or motherly character in such a position of leading or action/combat, and it's impossible to suspend disbelief
>The character has either little morality (slaughters people left and right), or the character has too high moral standards (IE sparing even the worst enemy)
>The character is "too anime"
>The character is "too realistic"

It's so hard to find balance, but at least too anime is tolerable, unless it's Bayonetta, who is just too obnoxious
