Wutai is supposed to be an analog for modern Japan. Japan got defeated and is now a kitschy facsimile of its former glory, meant only for Western tourism and factories to satisfy Western consumption. This is actually super apparent right now to everyone but the Nips only expressed themselves in video games back in the 90s. Materia is basically an analog for guns. So imagine a spirited Japanese tomboy that is obsessed with guns and wants to collect enough of them and bring them back to Japan, then pass them around in order to reignite the Samurai spirit so the Japanese can be an Empire again. This is Yuffie.

Something the original did that gets almost zero attention is how good Shinra is at rewriting history. Yuffie is kind of a brat who only cares about Wutai and Materia. But she's more right than even she knows. The Lifestream lost its name, it's Mako now. Knowlespole lost its name, now its Icicle Area assuming it's not just called "Northern Continent." No one even knows a whole village was wiped off map by Shinra? Oh you thought I meant Nibelheim? No I was talking about Corel although yeah Nibelheim got memory holed too. Too bad Sephiroth died under mysterious circumstances. Most popular soldier in the world, no one can explain what happened to him. Yuffie is struggling so hard to get her country out of Shinra's hands because it's already losing its identity. At least in OG, in Remake Wutai is still in open war with Shinra. And the most memorable part of it, other than being a tourist trap that serves its conquerors, is that there's a guy hiding there kidnapping teenagers so he can fuck them upside down on the faces of their ancestors.

What's funny is that SE actually dialed down her bratty, immature personality in Remake. Example: when discussing Corel in OG and Barret tells his story, Yuffie says

But in Remake most of Yuffie's hatred is directed at Scarlett. And she puts none of the blame on Barret

Yuffie is extremely attractive and I hope they let Cloud have a marriage sidequest in Part 3. In the original FF7 she was a princess/daughter of the war lord that's planning a coup against Midgar. She gets kidnapped alongside the Turks new hire girl and they have a truce to save both of them. Yuffie's father is more unhinged than her and I'd like to see him set Cloud up for marriage.
