Furries and fantasy races have been used that way since the beginning. They've always been used as a pass to explore racism as a story theme without getting shit on by the PC police. Though as you said, people will still say "this furry is black coded" and demand the voice actors be black or that the story include real world black representation based on their interpretation of the character. Hell, they even implied Knuckles was black and jewish in the Sonic movies.
