I find it unreliable simply because:
1. Dash attacks will hit you whether you get the parry or not, they simply go through you and you take damage anyway. This is probably included so that the game cant become parry centered even if you want to play that way
2. Multihit attacks cant reliably be parried, theres a delay in how often/fast you can attack, so if you try to parry an attack that hits multiple, youre more than likely fucked
3. Parry has push back, lets say that you want to parry a pure horizontal attack. Why not just jump, and then attack while youre falling down, instead of parrying and getting pushed out of range? Depending on how long the horizontal attack is.
Nightmare Grimm in the OG Hollow Knight alone, shows all these flaws in effect. Its even worse if your enemy jumps around a fuck ton, since parry sort of "freezes" the screen, it could just be a wasted attack that acts purely as defense, as the enemy dashes back or away.
