Devs should set the price that they would pay for their game if they went out and bought it at a store themselves. Team Cherry likes inexpensive games and that's unfathomably based.

Most indie devs don't have an ego the size of a blimp and think they can get away with charging people 30+ dollars.
Anyone in the space knows that 20 is already pushing it. 10 for midsized, and 5 for small arcade games.
Scale and scope matters to get units sold.
Anonymous No.720058907 [Report] >>720059314
I feel people have gone backwards in thinking. The price of goods is determined by what the developer believes it is worth and what they think they can get the most sales out of it. There is no thing as a set price. Variable pricing has existed as long as gaming has. Why are people trying to extract per entertainment value of what a game cost should be?
Anonymous No.720059035 [Report]

Obviously. Other devs want their lesser products at a much higher price. Silksong is lowering the bar.

$20 is a pretty good price point for an indie game. It's low enough that you could get away without ever going on sale, similar to how Factorio used to be.

Fuck it I'll say it since nobody else here will.

I'm a dev. And I've been working with 4 others to make a game.

Our price point was $25. Now think for a second why $20 silksong just absolutely nullified our hard work.

This means 1. Nobody will buy our game now if it's over $20.

2. We need to lower our price.

Basically team cherry fucked us all and even good indie games with this stupid pricing they just did. The fuck is wrong with them.

No. It's a fake controversy. Exactly one person said such a thing, and only after the media ran these stories. The reality is, it's shitting on big devs. Borderlands 4 releases in a few days, and it's $130 for the full release.

Basically, AAA devs are pissed that people aren't sucking their dicks to make them look good.

I know you're not a real dev but if you were, this wouldn't be a problem if you'd made a better game. A game is worth what people will pay for it and if your game isn't worth $25, don't complain that the smarter dev accurately priced their own game and sold buttloads.
500k (active players at once) times $20 is a fat fucking payday for an indie dev.

Controversy implies both points of view being somewhat valid, there is no controversy here. You either do right by the consumers or you are wrong.

Individual companies management issues are not the community´s problem. Devs can either do something or they can not and if they can not it means they need to improve to stay in business. That´s how it works. Devs and artists are not equally skilled. Pipelines differ for many reasons and so do resource administration and marketing.

Complaining about Silksong´s price tag is the same as all those devs that complained about BG3 quality last year. If you can´t do it then you can´t do it. You change or you die. That´s capitalism and it´s savage as fuck but there are no brakes on this train.

It is because it was assumed to be an absolute flawless game the entire world was waiting for and it would prove you don't need to be greedy to make a masterpiece.
But 78% positive reviews have washed the controversial aspects away and put the game squarely on the "mediocre" park with all the other indie metroidvanias that are a dime a dozen, so its price is now justified because its quality is the same as any of the indie shovelware that gets released daily.

No, they expected early review copies, so they could tell people whether or not to buy it before it came out (the real reason is so they could get in early on the hype rather than just confirm for everybody that the game is good after they've already started playing it.
