Doesn't mean he hates the people he sacrificed, the fact alone that it was a sacrifice to him is what proves his love for his brethren, and the love he have for them and still willing to sacrifice them all is what gave them all that power. If he didn't care for them, it would not count as a sacrifice to the eclipse. Skull Knight was a king and he sacrificed a whole kingdom to the eclipse, and that's why he is so powerful. It's a very interesting gimmick.
