That was certainly part of it. Also the idea that his "dream" was over and it was time to accept being a cripple that needs constant care. That all of his precious soldiers would move on without him, that all the people he held in his hands would slip away, that the world would simply forget him while he wasted away barely able to move. All his genius wasted all his plans ruined all his potential squandered and above all he himself accepting total failure, never to fly again. End of the line.

Guts, the one person who got under his skin taking his biggest cheerleader and leaving him behind was the cherry on top. And even then he hesitated. Not excusing his actions but for such a self absorbed schemer he had a lot going on.

I honestly have no idea why he's so hyped up as this pinnacle of villains in fiction.
His motivations are cartoonishly simple and the way he acts on them only gives him a small modicum of depth before the Eclipse but it's not like it makes him some kind of classic villain that should serve as some kind of benchmark.
He wants power and will stop at nothing to attain it, wow that's so compelling.

That was just a catalyst, he was always going to do that given the chance, and given the ties he has with fate it would always happen, possibly with different circumstances. Guts is the one revolting against fate.
Griffith will always follow his dream. Doesn't mean he hates the people he sacrificed, the fact alone that it was a sacrifice to him is what proves his love for his brethren, and the love he have for them and still willing to sacrifice them all is what gave them all that power. If he didn't care for them, it would not count as a sacrifice to the eclipse. Skull Knight was a king and he sacrificed a whole kingdom to the eclipse, and that's why he is so powerful. It's a very interesting gimmick.

As Guts explains, it is simply his nature to aim for ever greater heights. It's why he will never be satisfied. You are right in that he didn't need a kingdom for any practical reason. He wanted the castle because it was the top of the world, and he will continue to seek greater heights even from there.

It's a very romantic concept of the born conqueror. The man who sees a mountain and climbs it because it's there. Also he had serious psychological issues. Narcissistic personality disorder being the most obvious but probably other shit too.
