The runbacks are pretty lengthy. I don't think these guys even tested that out. They didn't test out a scenario where you lost the boss fight and had to come back to it. I think they just overlooked it because they were focusing on the boss attack patterns working as intended.

Silksong simply doesn't have enough complexity to warrant this kind of difficulty
It's just a 2D action platformer with 1 weapon and no combo system, designed around spamming the same small pp swipe all day. The game knows it's simplistic and overcompensates by requiring very precise play, which is not the kind of difficulty anyone cares for

This is something I hate - that skirmishing behavior with few tools to really do anything about it. Also, the game is constantly putting you in situations where you must do difficult platforming while dealing with these types of enemies. It gets tiresome.

The issue with Silksong if you're a FUCKING CASUAL, GET OUT, GET THE FUCK OUT is that the game doesn't compromise. Despite very obviously being inspired by FromSoft games, Team Cherry didn't adapt their design philosophy regarding difficulty to Silksong. FromSoft always lets the player determine their preferred difficulty and provides them with powerful tools to do so. For example:
>magic trivializes Demon's Souls, and each X-1 area contains a strong weapon with a prefix (for example, the crescent falchion)
>magic also trivializes Dark Souls, but the zweihander, drake sword, and any twinkling titanite weapon (especially the black knight weapons) can effortlessly carry you through the game
>the opening act of Elden Ring is intentionally designed to shower you with strong weapons and spells for every build (except ARC/INT, fuck you) after you get your ass kicked by Margit, with the bloodhound's fang being the most obvious example
Not to mention spirit ash summons and all the multiplicative modifiers in Elden Ring.

Silksong is much more strict and uncompromising. While the literal tools that Hornet has access to can be very strong, situationally or otherwise, it's not like Elden Ring where there's a side quest leading you to one of the best weapons in the game in the starting zone. You have your needles, your tools, your crests, and your charms and that's all you're getting. There's not a dedicated mechanic where you can effectively break the bosses' AI and trick them into fighting a ghost. Your only option is to play better or get lucky.

Anyways, the game is good, and I don't think it's too difficult despite there being a few bullshit moments. Most of the balance issues are annoyances.

i don't even care about the difficulty, i just dislike the decline of Metroidvania-ing. vendors sell most of the charms now, masks are too sparse, the crest and memory system are worse than notches, nail feels too weak. i like tools but using up shards is cancer. they clearly wanted, thematically, hornet to be a fixed playstyle about silk like a bug ninja than having diverse builds or playing too similar to the knight.

I've just been lurking these threads so I can't speak for how I think of the difficulty or how accurate what I'm about to say, I liked HK but didn't think it was some revelation or anything, but what I'm getting is that we found our new Doom Eternal. Some people will evangelize the difficulty to the point of outright dismissing anything people say until they prove they've beaten the game under whatever artificial metrics people come up with, while at the same time some will hate the game with a personal vendetta because of the difficulty.

Arguably it's similar although you're right that Eternal's complaints are more in the gameplay style. I've seen quite a few people say the playtesters for Silksong are speedrunning trannies because of how the game is designed, which is similar to Eternal being designed with speedrunner gameplay mentality.
I really wonder how Team Cherry will react. On the one hand, they've hit the jackpot, they don't need to compromise. Then again, I'd think they want their game to be well received rather than being frustrating. Honestly it's the only thing that's keeping me from buying it. I like a challenge but I don't think all challenge is inherently fun or satisfying.
